The Pkunk (meaning "peace" in their own language) are wacky, Dodobird-like beings, an offshoot of the Yehat race. They are pacifistic mystics who claim to be in constant contact with the "spirit-world". They once lived on Yehat homeworld of Gamma Serpentis I, but now reside in the Krueger constallation.

It was when Weeny Wikki Beeki Birdi sat on the Mystical Egg of Icelike Temperature and gave the Original Squawk -- "Rup-Rup-Rup-BGAK!" -- that their transformation from Yehat to Pkunk began.

While they love their distant brethren with all their hearts, the Yehat hate them with gusto. In spite of this, the Pkunk predict a day in which the Yehat will greet them with wings outstretched, beaks stuffed with grubs.

Pkunk frequently talk about spirits, fortune-telling and other new-age kind of stuff which usually amuses Humans. However somehow they are always right about their fortune-tellings which makes it probable that the Pkunk have an highly-advanced "sixth sense".

The Ilwrath are currently fighting a fanatical war against them, commanded by their Twin-gods Dogar and Kazon. The Pkunk travel the stars in their Fury vessels, which are no match for the Ilwrath Avenger.

The Pkunk seem to take this war very casually though, telling the Captain "We bear the spidery creatures no ill will. Without darkness there is no light. Without death there is no birth, and thanks to the Ilwrath there's lots of birth."

Once you first finished the Star Control II game, you may like to play the game in another way.
This page will describes various challenges that may make it interesting to replay the game.

__TOC__

The Challenges
Complete the optional quests
Some quests are optional. You may already have solved these quests when you first finished the games, but if you haven't, it's worth another play. Things you may want to do:
*Start the Yehat civil war
*Take care of the Slylandro Probe plague
*Rescue the Zoq-Fot-Pik
*Get all items you don't necessarilly need (Portal Spawner, both Broadcasters)
*Ally with everyone you can (Orz, Pkunk, Shofixti, Syreen, Supox, Thraddash, Utwig, Yehat (rebels), Zoq-Fot-Pik)

Time trial
Try to finish the game in as little time as possible. The best reported time so far is October 5 2155, without any optional quests.

Don't mine
Never mine anything, or sell fuel you bought from the Melnorme. Your money will have to come from fighting.

Be the bad guy
The game gets significantly more difficult without your friends (particularly the Melnorme). Piss off everyone you meet, or attack at sight. To stay into character, name your "alliance" "The Empire of ...", and sell your crew to the Druuge.

Don't visit the Starbase
A very difficult challenge, and it requires a lot of patience. Until you have access to the StarBase, every day in HyperSpace a Slylandro Probe will show up (even after you've acquired the self-destruct code). As you've got no way of upgrading your engines you can't outrun them, so be prepared to fight a lot, at least until you can get them to self-destruct. You will end up with mountains of money, but you've got nowhere to spend it.
Among other problems are: you can't replenish your crew, so you're dependant on your good fighting skills and gifts of other races; you have no Emergency Warp Escape Unit, so you cannot run away from a fight in progress; and no slave trading.

Description
The Ilwrath are large, red, spider-like aliens with numerous appendages, many eyes, and pincer mandibles.

The Ilwrath are born from egg sacs that are presumably filled with many eggs. Upon emerging from the eggs, the Ilwrath hatchlings attack and consume each other in a cannibalistic frenzy known as the Birth Rite.

As a species, they are psychopathically violent and religiously fanatical. They worship their twin dark gods, Dogar and Kazon, supposedly speak through the HyperWave Channel 44, which coincidentally is the channel the Umgah love to send their prank messages on.

Humans have many horror stories of the Ilwrath and the gruesome things they do to their prisoners of war, including dismemberment, evisceration, and other forms of torture meant to please Dogar and Kazon-for a good reason. After the Ur-Quan Hierarchy's victory in the First War, the Ilwrath planned to sacrifice all Human beings to their dark gods in a bloody ceremony, but the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za did not allow this, as it conflicted with the Path of Now and Forever.

The Ilwrath pilot the Avenger-class ships.

Origins
The Pkunk tell that the Ilwrath were once a species of supreme and absolute good, but they tried to become even more good, which caused them to "wrap around" the good-evil spectrum, resulting in the pure evil species now associated with the name Ilwrath. The accuracy of this tale is uncertain, due to the playful nature of the informants.

Details about the Ilwrath prior to their supposed transformation are unknown.

History
Early in their history, the Ilwrath had a subsistence hunter-gatherer society and worshiped many gods, from Zith of the Pelt to Awk of the Seds. We know little of early Ilwrath history as the Ilwrath refer to these as the "Dark Ages" of religous confusion.

At a point in their history, a consolidation of the existing Ilwrath religions took place. A priestly ruling body deliberated on the multitude of belief systems and concluded that the Ilwrath must worship the twin gods of Death Dogar and Kazon, and discard all other gods "be they of Hearth or Flowing Web." The new ruling class declared that only priests are capable of interpreting the will of the gods, and refined the techniques of worship to perfection. Specific examples of doctrine included the eating of Heretics and the surrender of all possessions to holy sites or priestly dwellings.

After this point, Ilwrath society focused itself entirely on satisfying the will of the twin gods. Ilwrath technology advanced towards the creation of more efficient means of murder. Religious rituals revolved around pain and death, as is exemplified by a common act of affirmation that involves full or partial amputation of one's own limbs. Even the many deaths at the Birth Rite was interpreted as an Ilwrath's first tribute to the twin gods.

Prior to their contact with the Ur-Quan, the Ilwrath probably have developed a primitive space-faring technology. The Chenjesu have reported contact with the Ilwrath, but considered them a negligible threat due to their primitive technology.

The Ilwrath were among the first races enslaved by the Ur-Quan. Seeing the potential of the violent and fanatical Ilwrath as Battle Thralls, the Ur-Quan gave the Ilwrath the technology to improve their ships to match that of the Chenjesu and the Mmrnmhrm. The large number of Ilwrath ships as well as the Ilwrath's religious zeal in seeking the death of other races proved to be an asset to the Ur-Quan offensive.

Upon the defeat of the Humans, the Ilwrath prepared a grand ceremony to murder all of the Humans, which was to be called "Mountains of Flesh". As the Humans have elected to be slave-shielded, the Ur-Quan stopped the Ilwrath ceremony, forcing the Ilwrath to use species indigenous to their homeworld for their sacrifices.

Some years after the end of the war, a bureaucratic error resulted in the depletion of the supply of creatures for sacrifice on the Ilwrath homeworld. A great crisis occured in Ilwrath religion and appeals to the twin gods for guidance became much more frequent.

The calls for guidance were answered. Around 2147, a hyperspace broadcast, claiming to be from the gods Dogar and Kazon, was heard on hyperspace Channel 44. The broadcast ordered the Ilwrath to attack the Pkunk. The priest ruling class, feeling a threat to their authority, counseled the general population to be skeptical of the broadcast. However, the lack of sacrificial rituals, compounded with over-taxation, lack of "quality death in ceremony" and the over-complicated pronounciation of Dogar and Kazon´s names had apparently produced a religious void in many of the Ilwrath, prompting the majority to murder the entire priest caste. After this casual slaughter, the Ilwrath then embarked on a campaign of genocide against the Pkunk, devoting almost their entire fleet on the destruction of the Yehat sub-species.

Hierarchy Status
The Ilwrath are Battle Thralls of the Ur-Quan Hierarchy. Due to their zeal in battling other species, they are the backbone of the Hierarchy offensive. Along with the Spathi, the Ilwrath were commanded to enforce the restrictions placed on Earth, but around the year 2137 abandoned their post to satisfy their (and their gods') bloodthirst.

Extinction
At the end of SC2, the Ilwrath met their doom fighting the Thraddash in a war which led to both race´s annihilation.

Some histories say that when the Ur-Quan first entered this sector of space, the Ilwrath had not yet developed hyperspace capable engines, and their early conquest was much to their delight, as the Ur-Quan provided them with the hyperspace technology allowing them to practice their unholy rituals on many other races during the war.

The Ur-Quan later reveal that the Ilwrath were the strongest and most reliable of the Hierarchy battle thralls, and that their destruction with the Thraddash was perhaps the biggest defeat the Battlethralls had ever suffered. (SC3)

I'm pretty sure the relevant lines from the Ilwrath actually referred to cannibalism among the hatchlings; the "first frothy draught of blood" being the blood of their siblings.

The SC1 manual says the following, but I'm not sure if it's still copyrighted by Accolade:

When Fred Ford left high school, he aspired to be a science fiction writer. He also wanted to eat regularly. Fred’s first programming job was developing neat games of which you’ve never heard for neat Japanese computers of which you’ve never heard.

Then, Fred unpacked his box of office stuff. This may not sound threatening to the uninitiated, but within a month Fred’s employers had gone out of business. Fred packed up his box and moved on. Each time that Fred and his box arrived at a new office, things went well until he unpacked his box. Then a Gypsy curse was activated, and the company and Fred soon parted ways. Sometimes the company survived, and sometimes it did not. About the time Fred unpacked his box at Island Graphics Corporation (where he authored award-winning UNIX software), Paul Reiche III signed with Accolade to develop several original games. Paul had previously authored Archon, Archon II — Adept, World Tour Golf, and other games for Electronic Arts.

Perhaps the curse of the box of office stuff is caused by the flat dead lizard-on-a-stick which Fred keeps in his box. It might be something deeper in the box, something more sinister... or it could be related to Fred’s tendency to breathe through his eye.

One week after Fred had unpacked his box at Island Graphics, the dreaded Gypsy curse returned. So he joined Paul Reiche at “Toys for Bob”, a software cooperative located in Marin County, California, bringing the box with him. In the eighteen months of development of Star Control, Paul has checked daily to be sure that nothing — not one thing — has left that box.
The Shofixti are a marsupial race of honorable mammals whose homeworld, called Kyabetsu, was at Delta Gorno I. They somewhat resemble antropomorphic raccoons, which has lead the Humans to view them as "cute;" something which puzzles other races and angers the Shofixti.

The Shofixti were elevated to the stars by the Yehat who traditionally have taken the role of an adoptive guardian over the Shofixti. Before the Yehat discovered them, the Shofixti had a feudal culture that had an uncanny resemblance to that of Earth's medieval Japan.

Shofixti are typically brown in color but can vary. They have extremely short gestation rates, and can reproduce rapidly and age into adulthood within a few months. During the war, the Shofixti provided the backbone for personnel. Even during the bleakest periods of the war, the Shofixti always provided enough crew to keep the starships of the Alliance of Free Stars full.

During the later stages of the war, their Scout ships provided much of the recon for the alliance. After the conquest of the Humans, the Shofixti and Yehat forces withdrew to the Gorno stars but did not permit the Syreen to follow. As the Ur-Quan Dreadnought force bore down upon Delta Gorno, The Yehat Queen suddenly ordered a withdrawal of every Terminator back to the Serpentis stars. The Shofixti ships were no match for the Ur-Quan fleet. When the last of their ships had been destroyed and the Ur-Quan fleet began to advance in system, the Shofixti in a final act of courage and defiance used a Precursor bomb device to open a hole on the surface of their sun to cause a mini-supernova that destroyed everything in the inner system of Delta Gorno, including a third of the combined Ur-Quan fleet.
The Ilwrath are currently fighting a fanatical war against them, commanded by their Twin-gods Dogar and Kazon. The Pkunk travel the stars in their Fury vessels, which are no match for the Ilwrath Avenger.

The Pkunk seem to take this war very casually though, and tell the Captain something along the lines of "Without Death, there cannot be birth, and the Ilwrath are making sure there is plenty of birth."

Weeny Wikki Beeki Birdi is a very important figure in Pkunk history/legend. It was Weeny Wikki Beeki Birdi who sat on The Mystical Egg of Icelike Temperature and gave the Original Squawk--"Rup-Rup-Rup-BGAK!"--somehow causing some Yehat to become Pkunk.
