There is a near-infinite supply of enemy ships in a star system and you can gain a considerable amount of resource units by scavanging their debris. Combat salvage does not require a [[Storage Bay]], so the length of a hunt is limited only by your combat skill and crew complement.
* Early on in the game, technological advances may prove more useful than knowledge by improving your resource-gathering and combat capabilities. Try to find a race willing to trade technologies or items with you.
Turning jets are not as important early in the game, but you should not have below three. Although, turning jets are essential for fighting, so you may consider equipping all your turning jet slots if you can afford it.
* You lose no money selling ships & modules; it's cost-effective to rework your flagship & fleet to suit whatever task you're planning. If aliens give you ships you don't fly well, sell them.
* Always keep a couple of fleet positions open when visiting alien species so you can receive ships as gifts.
* If you're mining bring extra landers and as many storage bays as you can afford. Also remember to bring around 15 extra units of fuel per [[Storage Bay]] -- every landing costs fuel. Lastly, pack an extra crew pod. Planet landings are hazardous.
* Depending on what you're hunting, the best "Bounty Hunter" configuration might be an unarmed mothership with extra crew pods supporting a fleet of combat ships particularly suited to your chosen prey.
* Always be prepared to fight a Slylandro Probe. You can pick every battle except this one.
* Notice how the orbits of planets are different colors? Figure out what they mean and it can save you some time.
* You should also note that different star systems have different temperatures. Generally, the higher the temperature, the bigger the mineral batches will be. Go for hot - but not too hot as it may prove risky. Note that giants or SuperGiants may prove to be too hot to access.
* Talk to the starbase commander about resource gathering.
* Fuel is expensive. It's more efficient to completely clear a system than to go back twice. If you run out of room and there's still good stuff in the system, consider dumping some of your cheapest cargo.
* Make sure mineral quality is worth the fuel cost, especially for planets with high gravity.
* Fuel is valuable. If you find aliens who trade for it you can sell it back at the starbase for huge returns in RU's.

'''Resource units''' ('''RUs''') are a pseudo-currency used at [[Earth Starbase]] for "buying" fuel, [[List of Flagship Modules|modules]], [[List of Ships|ships]], and crew. They represent the amount of resources available for [[The Captain]] to use in his fight against the [[Ur-Quan Hierarchy]]. Because RUs are simply a handy way for The Captain to keep track of resources, and not a true currency which is exchanged for goods and services, everything purchased at Starbase can be "sold" back at cost.

You can get RUs by bringing [[List of mineral types#Mineral Values|minerals]] back to Starbase and asking Commander [[Hayes]] to unload them. Rarer elements are worth more RUs.

You also get RUs immediately by destroying ships in combat -- the scrap metal will be scavenged automatically. You do not need to convert scrap metal into RUs, because the materials were already refined to make the ship you destroyed. Larger ships will give you more RUs than smaller ships. However, if you run away from combat or the flagship is destroyed, the scrap metal cannot be scavenged (even if you destroyed some of the ships in a fleet), so you will not get any RUs from the battle. You will not get RUs for ships from your own fleet which are destroyed by the enemy.

RU's obtained from combat salvage do not require a [[Storage Bay]].

* Having trouble fighting a certain species? Practice against them in [[Super Melee]] using just the ships you have on hand.
* There are no perfect ships and useless ships. Every ship has its advantages and disadvantages, and if you learn them well, you will be a good fighter. That said, there are generally weak ships, and ships which are almost unable to beat certain ships in one fight.
* Try to diversify your Fleet. A new kind of ship could prove priceless against races you could not combat beforehand. If you are unfamiliar with a ship of a new ally, test it in Super Melee.
* Raw firepower does not decide everything. The Chmmr [[Avatar]], the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za [[Dreadnought]] and the Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah [[Marauder]] have the most firepower in the game, but there are lots of ways to defeat them with other ships with less firepower.
* Use the planet's gravity well. Slow ships can use it to accelerate beyond their maximum velocity using the [[Gravity Whip]] maneuver. Luring a fast ship near the planet can make it easier to hit. The Chmmr [[Avatar]] can force the enemy ship to collide with the planet with its special ability.
* ''Full game only:'' Don't forget about your emergency warp escape. Escort vessels can be recalled from battle by pressing the ESC key with no fuel cost, though they will be suspended for the remainder of the melee. Doing so with your flagship will evacuate your entire fleet, but will use 5 fuel units. (''Note:'' This will function for the flagship if fuel is not available.)
* ''Full game only:'' A ship is vulnerable for about six seconds when it is preparing to escape combat, but it is not affected by gravity. Flying very close to the planet before initiating a warp escape will usually keep you out of trouble, as the intense [[gravity well]] is hard to navigate for most ships and some projectiles.
* ''Full game only:'' If you are overwhelmed while facing multiple ships (or worse, infinite ships), you can take advantage of the musical delay after destroying one your enemy's ships with your flagship. As the enemy ship explodes, ''quickly'' hit the ESC key. (''Warning:'' There is still some risk that the next ship will appear very close to you and will be able to inflict damage.)
* Notice how in mid-range combat your two ships tend to be directly opposite each other? Hmmm...
* Know where the planet is. Nothing is worse than being in a close range fight and smacking into the planet.
* The computer opponent is very predictable.
* The computer is very quick and accurate at close range. Keep at standoff range until you get better.
* ''Full game only:'' Max out the turning jets and thrusters on your Precursor vessel ASAP.
* ''Full game only:'' Put a rear firing gun on your Precursor vessel. Now you can fire while having the option to run away.
* ''Full game only:'' Don't bother initially with the side or off-center firing guns. They just drain power.
* ''Full game only:'' Combat salvage doesn't use [[Storage Bay]] space. Bounty hunters needn't buy them.
* The Slylandro Probe will usually back off if you point your guns at it. While in [[HyperSpace]], it can be outrun with enough thrusters, avoiding encounters.

The [[Ilwrath]] were named after a friend of the creators (XXX: both?) named McIlwraith.

The name [[Melnorme]] is a reference to jazz singer [[wikipedia:Mel Tormé|Mel Tormé]].

When the [[Spathi]] [[The Safe Ones|Safe Ones]] ask the player for the [[Secret Spathi Cypher]], one of the incorrect options is "Wagh-nagl Fthagn", which spelled a little bit differently ("Wgah'nagl Fhtagn") comes from "''Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!''", a liturgical phrase in H.
One of the other options for the Spathi Cypher, "Gort, merenga!" comes from the movie "[[wikipedia:The Day the Earth Stood Still|The Day the Earth Stood Still]]".
The [[Syreen]] are based on the [[wikipedia:Siren|Siren]]s from classical mythology. They were sea nymphs who would use enchanting song to lure ships onto the cliffs.

The [[Shofixti]] are inspired by the historical [[wikipedia:History of Japan|Japanese culture]].

The Mosquito Mange is mentioned in the [[Androsynth]] computer records immediately prior to their disappearance. It is a reference to the term found in [[wikipedia:Roadside Picnic|Roadside Picnic]] refering to graviconcentrates - areas of heightened and directed gravity.

The ''Roadside Picnic'' might also be the inspiration for the 'Empties'. In the novel they are one of the common alien artifacts found in the Zones. In the game they are a [[Precursor]] artifact that Commander [[Hayes]] mentions in relation to the [[Ultron]].

The name [[Androsynth]] is taken from the Greek "andros" ("man") and "synthetic" from Greek "syn" ("together") and "thesis" ("put"), or as the [[Star Control II]] manual says it "fake men".

The [[Mycon]] is taken from the Greek prefix "myc-" or "myco-", which means Fungus.

[[Tanaka]]'s opening comments, "you killed my father, my mother, my many brothers, all six of my sisters - prepare to die," may pay homage to the movie [[wikipedia:The Princess Bride|The Princess Bride]], in which the character [[wikipedia:Inigo Montoya|Inigo Montoya]] has prepared a similar comment for when he confronts his father's murderer, [[wikipedia:Count Rugen|Count Rugen]].

When you choose the aggressive lines to speak towards the [[Slylandro]] [[Probe]]s, the third time you get the response "ENACTING THIRD LAW." before combat is initiated. This refers to [[wikipedia:Isaac Asimov|Isaac Asimov]]'s [[wikipedia:Three Laws of Robotics|Three Laws of Robotics]]. The third law says "A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.". The Probe's version must not have the second clause as the first law says "A robot may not harm a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.". Also the [[Slylandro]] will go "to seek out new life and new civilizations, to go where no catalog item 2418 Remote Self-replicating robot probe had gone before." when asked about the programming of the probes, a reference to Star Trek.

When the [[Utwig]] are trying to tell you what to do with the [[Precursor Bomb]], at one point they say that the "Bomb must be...Hugged." This is likely a reference to the movie [[Wikipedia:Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb|Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb]].

One of the ways that the Utwig determined that the [[Ultron]] could have been saved was by cushioning the fall with a fuzzy wumpus. A Wumpus is a mysterious monster from the famous, early computer game [[Wikipedia:Hunt the Wumpus|Hunt the Wumpus]].

When describing the [[Kohr-Ah]], the Utwig say that their stated purpose is "to seek out new life and new civilizations...and then annihilate them," a clear play on the mission statement of the [[Wikipedia:Starship Enterprise|Starship Enterprise]] of [[Wikipedia:Star Trek|Star Trek]] fame.

Numerous ship captain names are actually references.

Hey Svdb, what's the Ultronomicon style for referring to the Captain? I've seen [[The Captain]] and [[Captain Zelnick]] used interchangeably in the text, though the latter is, of course, a redirect to The Captain. If it's the style to use "The Captain" throughout this wiki, I'd like to perhaps create a style guide, (at <s>[[Ultronomicon:Style guide]]</s> [[Ultronomicon:Manual of Style]]) and mention such style decisions there. As a side note, I've been inactive for a while, but I hope to contribute more to this great project of yours. :-) --[[User:Phoenix|Phoenix]] [[User_talk:Phoenix|(t)]] 23:43, 30 Sep 2005 (CEST)

Most contributors seem to agree that 'The Captain' is the way to go, as the player can change the name, and in the PC version, you would be asked. One contributor disagrees, but I think he has conceded. Old pages probably still contain references to Zelnick. The story with 'The Flagship' vs 'The Vindicator' is analogous. There's also 'SIS' the name used in the code, but it has no place here.

There's a similar difference of opinion on how to describe game events. Some people like these things as things that can or will happen if/unless the player takes certain actions ("If The Captain allies with the Spathi, they will erect a slave shield at their home world"), while others prefer describing things as if they already happened, assuming the most complete, happy ending ("after The Captain allied with the Spathi they erected a slave shield at their home world"). I think the former is better myself, as it is more exact.

I agree that a style guide is a good idea, but what we could perhaps use more, to come to such a guide, is a discussion area where we could discuss things like this, like the "Village Pump" at Wikipedia. I had been planning to introduce something like that, but I've been planning a lot of things. Feel free to create it yourself if you like. &mdash; SvdB 00:52, 4 Oct 2005 (CEST)

:Yeah, I also posted this question in [[Ultronomicon talk:Community Portal]], though I don't know if that area is very active anymore. I'll probably create the page and put up that it's a work in progress, similar to the "Proposed process" dialogue box in Wikipedia. As for how to describe game events, I think I've been doing the latter, but I agree, the former is probably better. It also makes me wonder how to edit, for example, the '''Member of''' field in <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:RaceBox|RaceBox]]<nowiki>}}</nowiki>. For instance, with the [[Spathi]], there would be a couple of options:
:#[[Ur-Quan Hierarchy|Hierarchy of Battle Thralls]]
:#[[Ur-Quan Hierarchy|Hierarchy of Battle Thralls]],<br>[[New Alliance of Free Stars]]
:#[[Ur-Quan Hierarchy|Hierarchy of Battle Thralls]],<br>[[New Alliance of Free Stars]] (can join)
:Given your opinion about game events, we should probably go with the third option. --[[User:Phoenix|Phoenix]] [[User_talk:Phoenix|(t)]] 14:46, 4 Oct 2005 (CEST)
:Here's another idea. In certain places where the actions and fate of the characters are largely dependent on player actions (such as [[Tanaka]]), how about placing a tag similar to the <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:spoiler|spoiler]]<nowiki>}}</nowiki>, but read something like "the following events are largely dependant on player actions, and may not occur" (or something similar). This kind of a tag would probably require a beginning and end tag. --[[User:Phoenix|Phoenix]] [[User_talk:Phoenix|(t)]] 15:05, 4 Oct 2005 (CEST)
::I agree that something like "(can join)" would be best, but I don't like the exact phrase. It's a bit unclear imho. I'd personally prefer "(optional)", or "(at the player's choice)".
::As for the tags, I think that if the relevant text is phrased appropriately, such tags would be unnecessary.
:: SvdB 20:46, 8 Oct 2005 (CEST)
:::I'll put "(optional)", for now. --[[User:Phoenix|Phoenix]] [[User_talk:Phoenix|(t)]] 19:47, 10 Oct 2005 (CEST)

:: SvdB 20:46, 8 Oct 2005 (CEST)
:::I'll put "(optional)", for now. --[[User:Phoenix|Phoenix]] [[User_talk:Phoenix|(t)]] 19:47, 10 Oct 2005 (CEST)

== wiki weirdness ==

This is weird; when I use <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>, my name doesn't link to my user page anymore. Anyone have any idea? &mdash; SvdB 21:13, 8 Oct 2005 (CEST)

:Under Preferences < User data, do you have '''Raw signatures (without automatic link)''' checked, and what is the setting in '''Your nickname (for signatures)'''? --[[User:Phoenix|Phoenix]] [[User_talk:Phoenix|(t)]] 00:23, 9 Oct 2005 (CEST)
::Ah, thanks. It was indeed the "Raw signatures" setting. I don't recall ever changing that, but apparently, I must have. &mdash; [[User:Svdb|SvdB]] 04:15, 9 Oct 2005 (CEST)
== PlanetBox ==

How do I make templates like PlanetBox to list the amount of resources? I have been exploring the map and have a table of data for the various planets that is better than the spreadsheet that Now and Forever offers in their file page. We already have a list of constellations, so adding a box for the recources on the different planets would be a help, I think.

Admiral '''ZEX''' was the foremost hero of the [[VUX]] military from the [[First War of the Alliance]] and, possibly, the greatest military tactician in known space before his death. After being conquered by the [[Hierarchy of Battle Thralls]] pressed into service against the [[Alliance of Free Stars]] by the [[Ur-Quan]] [[Kzer-Za]], the VUX found themselves greatly outclassed in combat strength, particularly by their bellicose neighbors, the [[Yehat]]. Their inferior technology, numbers and logistic organization would have caused them to be quickly overrun were it not for the military genius of ZEX, a young officer who quickly rose through the ranks with his brilliant analytical mind.

ZEX used the VUX's unlikely strengths in abstract mathematics and astrogation principles to find ways to win seemingly impossible situations. VUX ships under his command became known for their ability to surprise enemies, approaching from unforeseen flight paths and using amazingly accurate HyperSpace navigation to corner enemies and quickly destroy them, more than making up for the relatively weak range and power of their weapons or their smaller numbers. ZEX set up countless tactical situations to make this possible, including the well-known Fortress Square and Dynamic Triangle formation techniques. By the end of the war, he had become the unquestioned leader of the VUX military and one of the VUX race's most honored individuals.

However, his brilliance seemed tempered by an odd form of mental imbalance. In his personal life ZEX seemed drawn to the grotesque and bizarre, and soon his obsessive fascination with strange, unique animal life became well known. He rebelled against rigid VUX social norms: The more offensive an organism appeared by the standards of puritanical VUX aesthetics the more he wholeheartedly embraced it, with what came to be an uninhibited, almost sexual enthusiasm. ZEX soon became known publicly as a pervert and his public stature became seen as having a corrupting influence on the morals of VUX society.

After the war's end when his active service was no longer needed, ZEX became more and more of a problem. Unwilling to strip him of his honors but unable to tolerate the political consequences of keeping him in public view, the VUX High Council compromised by removing ZEX from public life and awarding him a whole deserted, inhabitable planet in the Alpha Cerenkov system to keep as his personal property, along with all the resources he needed to pursue his peccadilloes outside of media scrutiny, protected by a fleet of the VUX military's best (led, of course, by ZEX himself in his modified [[Intruder]]). There, he and his crew of subordinates established an enormous menagerie of rare beasts from across known space, as well as collecting other valuables, including Precursor artifacts. ZEX even captured sentients, notably a set of cryogenically imprisoned [[Shofixti Maidens]], but his true lust was for the deepest object of his desire and not coincidentally the race whose appearance VUX culture most wholeheartedly loathed, the [[Humans]].

ZEX got his chance when [[The Captain]] came to negotiate for the Maidens' release in his quest to restore the [[Shofixti]] species. ZEX agreed to comply if Zelnick would retrieve for him a particular [[VUX Beast|legendary monster]], which most of the sketchy records surrounding it agreed was the most fearsome and grotesque creature in known space. "ZEX's Beauty", as it was nicknamed, was eventually located in the [[Delta Lyncis]] system. When Zelnick tried to close the deal, ZEX double-crossed him, revealing his intention to take the beast and kidnap what he truly regarded as the most deformed, vicious and therefore appealing creature he had ever encountered, Zelnick himself. Fortunately for Zelnick, ZEX's forces proved unable to control the beast during the transfer process, and it escaped and ravaged his compound, destroying most of his facilities and killing him and his personnel before vanishing into the wilderness.

A legendary monster, only one living individual of which is known to exist. This beast was described in ancient literature as being unmatched in ferocity and power, leading [[Admiral ZEX]], an obsessive collector of grotesque fauna, to become obsessed with acquiring it. The only known reference to its location was an ancient wildlife book written by an unknown alien author, which ZEX had found and studied. The Beast was said to live on a planet orbiting a yellow star in the constellation "Linch-Nas-Ploh", an eight-star constellation &mdash; "Linch-Nas-Ploh", in the aliens' language, meant "the snake-like creature who has swallowed the elephantine beast".

ZEX challenged [[The Captain]] to find this Beast for him before he would turn over his captured [[Shofixti Maidens]]. The Captain agreed, and finally heard of a Beast that might fit this description in his dealings with the [[Thraddash]], finally learning that the yellow star of "Linch-Nas-Ploh" was the Delta star of the constellation humans had named [[Delta Lyncis|Lyncis]].

The creature appears to be the only extant, extremely long-lived member of its species, though there may be an alternate explanation for why only one was found and why the ancients referred to it in the singular. It is classified by [[Earth]] xenologists as a "xenoteratomorph", or "alien monster form" &mdash; a creature much larger and stronger than roughly equivalent Earth species. In appearance it has a huge head surrounded by barbed tentacle-like appendages along with two longer, three-jointed armlike appendages covered with spikes and blades at the base, with green skin and a red tongue. Because of its large size and robust nervous system, it is highly resistant to stunner bolts, and required several batteries' worth of stun charges from crew's lander before it was incapacitated. Even then, it only took it a few seconds to recover from the stun effects, and required extremely strong magnetic restraints to hold in place. Its extreme aggression and the length and flexibility of its "arms" made it very dangerous to approach; it attacked and injured many members of the Starbase's scientific crew while it was kept there, including xenobiology research team leader [[Chu|Dr. Chu]]. It appeared to have an instinctive urge to constantly eat, chewing up anything it could get within its reach; upon finding something too hard for its teeth to break, it would rip it to pieces with its arms in frustration.

Due to the dangerous nature of the Beast, The Captain transported it to ZEX's private world as quickly as possible. It was unsurprising that ZEX proved overconfident in his ability to control the Beast, and it quickly escaped the control of its handlers and rapidly laid waste to the menagerie, killing and devouring ZEX and his subordinates, before it ran away into the wilderness, leaving The Captain free to salvage what he could from the ruins.

Cosumel: Added location of Admiral Zex

"ZEX's Beauty", as it was nicknamed, was eventually located in the Delta Lyncis system. The ''Roadside Picnic'' might also be the inspiration for the 'Empties'. In the novel they are one of the common alien artifacts found in the Zones.
