Flexibility is the key to survival. The robotic Mmrnmhrm understood this concept, as proven by their agreement to join the Chenjesu in their "Process", and their warships have integrated this concept wholly and fully. The Mmrnmhrm X-Form, also known as the Mmrnmhrm Transformer, could quickly transform from the slow but powerful X-Wing form to the quick, stinging Y-Wing form.1

Navigation
X-Wing
The X-Wing form has the dubious honor of being the slowest ship in the game, even slower than the VUX Intruder. However, while terribly slow, the X-Wing form has an excellent turning rate, allowing it quickly to bring its formidable weaponry to bear upon its opponents.

Y-Wing
The quick Y-Wing form relies on the concept of "If you can’t hit me, you can’t kill me". One of the fastest ships in the game, the Y-Wing form is only somewhat hampered by its slow turn-rate. In this form, the ship can quite effectively evade enemy shots if flown by a skilled pilot.

Armament
Primary
X-Wing
The X-Wing form is equipped with a powerful twin-laser array that deals enormous damage at a short range. This weapon rapidly depletes the modest energy store of the Transformer, so use the laser array with care.

Y-Wing
The Y-Wing form uses long-range twin missile launchers with fair tracking systems. While the missiles cause little damage individually, their range when correctly mixed with the Y-Wing form’s immense speed can slowly demolish a ship, causing slow but constant attritional damage from a safe distance. Being able to outrun most ships, the Y-Wing form is vital to winning any battle.

Secondary
The secondary ability of the Transformer is to switch between the X-Wing and Y-Wing modes. This is a fairly intensive process, and will fully deplete the combat batteries of the Transformer.

It is worth noting that VUX limpets will affect the two forms separately — limpets that attach to the ship while it is in X-Wing form will only affect its maneuverability in X-Wing form, and the same is true of the Y-Wing form.2

Tactical Overview
When piloted skillfully the Transformer can prove a lethal adversary to most ships, either by attrition or by short and deadly laser-blast. An experienced pilot can use the flexibility of the versatile Transformer to overcome most ships. However, the Transformer can struggle in battles where speed and maneuverability are simultaneously required.

An effective tactical use of the X-Form's transformation capability combines the strengths of both forms in a repeated hit-and-run strategy. The Y-Wing Form's high acceleration and top speed are effective at rapidly getting out of range of an enemy to recharge combat batteries. Once out of range, the X-Wing Form's high maneuverability can be used to quickly rotate around to face the enemy. Another quick switch to the Y-Wing allows the Transformer to attack with the long-range, homing missiles and to retreat again when the enemy gets too close.

Notes and references
1The names for the two forms are found in the Star Control II manual, p. 85 (PC) or p. 36 (3DO).
2From a mail by Paul Reiche III to a Star Control II player:
::I should probably come up with some good rationale, but game-design-wise I think we were looking for ways to encourage the player to shift forms. When play-testing the Mmrnmhrm we noticed that more advanced players would engage in a very slow and (to some) boring strategy of remaining at long distance, constantly shooting missiles. By allowing the limpets to be negated in the alternate form, the player would be more likely to shift in order to avoid the limpet slowdown.

::So for a rationale, hmm... Perhaps the Mmrnmhrm ship has total redundancy between key functional systems for its 2 forms, including hull plates. That way damage, besides loss of crew, would not affect the functionality of the alternate form.

__NOTOC__

The Chenjesu Broodhome is made (or grown, as some speculate) using crystalline solids which allow the ship to hold up against significant punishment in combat. The Broodhome's colossal frame houses the means to rapidly fabricate and deploy combat support drones known as DOGIs. Once deployed, these drones are controlled via four protrusions on the forward hull which act as high-frequency resonators. The renowned might of this ship comes at the cost of mobility, of which the Broodhome has very little to speak. During the Ur-Quan Slave War, the Broodhome was the only Alliance ship that the Ur-Quan considered to be a meaningful threat to the Hierarchy forces.1

Navigation
The Broodhome is the most cumbersome war ship of the present era. Although its top speed is high enough to overtake a few other known craft in an extended chase, this vessel's minimal acceleration and turn rate can make this quite difficult. Broodhome pilots must take every possible precaution to avoid drifting into planetary bodies during combat.

Armament
Primary
The Broodhome launches Photon Crystal Shards as its main weapon. These can be propelled over vast distances2 and explode with incredible force. Photon Crystal Shards have several limitations: their velocity is mediocre, only one may be present at a time, and no homing capability exists. Direct hits with this weapon are infrequent as one might expect. Fortunately, the shard has an alternate firing mode which is intended to turn near-misses into partial hits. Upon receiving the proper signal, a shard will detonate itself, hurling shrapnel out in many different directions. A direct hit from a full shard inflicts six damage, while each fragment of shrapnel inflicts two damage. A Broodhome cannot be harmed by its own ordnance.

Secondary
The Chenjesu often rely on DOGI ("De-energizing Offensive Guided Interceptor") combat support drones. During battle, DOGIs will seek out an enemy ship and attempt to crash into it. DOGIs will avoid their designated target's forward firing arc so as to prolong their lifespan. A DOGI collision will inflict no damage, but rather drain ten points of energy. DOGIs also carry sufficient mass to alter an enemy ship's trajectory upon collision. A Broodhome must use up its entire energy capacity to bring a DOGI into combat, though it is usually worth the trouble. DOGIs have three hit points and are unfortunately quite vulnerable to friendly fire from Photon Crystal Shards. Only four DOGIs can be maintained at a time.

Tactical Overview
Although there are definite exceptions, the Broodhome usually performs better when combat is fought over a distance. Traveling away from the enemy is therefore recommended during most engagements. The high firepower of this ship does allow it to hold its own in short range combat, but directly approaching an opponent means that the Broodhome's primary weapon will suffer a disadvantage from the Relativity Effect while the enemy will receive a benefit from it. The aggressive approach also leaves the Broodhome more vulnerable to flanking maneuvers.

The primary weapon can be used to flood a circular area in front of the Broodhome with shrapnel. To do this, rapidly tap the "Weapon" key. This is most useful against opponents which are attempting to flank the Broodhome. It also has some limited potential for shooting down incoming projectiles. The downside of this tactic is that it puts a great strain on the Broodhome's battery.

DOGIs vary in usefulness depending on what the Broodhome is up against. Certain ships will find DOGIs easy to avoid, while others are virtually guaranteed to be neutralized and subsequently destroyed because of them. DOGIs are only truly detrimental when they are deployed immediately before the enemy begins an assault on the Broodhome, leaving the Broodhome unable to fire its weapon at a critical moment. Bringing these into the fray is otherwise worthwhile.

When fighting against a Broodhome, there is one very important thing to keep in mind: DOGIs withdraw when your ship's front is pointed towards them. It is possible to ward off several DOGIs at once through clever steering, especially when controlling a ship with a fast turn rate.

The Words is the title usually given to the special phrase to which both Ur-Quan factions have an almost ritualistic response, explaining why they do what they do. The Words are usually stated as "Hold! What you are doing to us is wrong! Why do you do this thing?".

The Words were first spoken as a plea by the Mael-Num to the Kohr-Ah as the Kohr-Ah fleet was preparing to "cleanse" the Mael-Num homeworld. Because of the simplicity and clarity of the question, the Kohr-Ah "felt compelled to explain." During the explanation, the Kzer-Za fleet, having slave-shielded the Faz and having heard of the "cleansing" of the Yuptar, arrived to oppose the violent enforcement of the Eternal Doctrine. This encounter marked the first Doctrinal Conflict.

Although only the Kohr-Ah were present at the first uttering of The Words, both the Kohr-Ah and the Kzer-Za respond to the special phrase. The Kohr-Ah response is very notable, delaying the destruction of the speaker of The Words for several minutes and giving many details of the Ur-Quan history. The reaction is so entrenched that the Kohr-Ah will continue the recitation even if the one who spoke The Words protests. On the other hand, the Kzer-Za response is a much shorter summary of their history; however it is not devoid of the same high emotion shown by their Kohr-Ah cousins.

There are only three known instances of someone saying The Words to the Ur-Quan:
*the Mael-Num over twenty-thousand years ago
*the terrified Spathi captain, who was sent to first meet the approaching Kzer-Za fleet, in "a moment of panicked genius"
*The Captain

Gameplay notes
Sources of information
The Words are available as a conversation option after being learned from either the:

*Arilou Lalee'lay (by asking "Can you give us any more information?" for the second time)
*Safe Ones (by asking "Have there been any developments of significance?" for the third time)
*Pkunk (by asking them "I am still having a little trouble defeating the Ur-Quan. Any advice?") — they say the Words in a slightly different way - "Hold! Why do you do this! What you are doing is wrong!".

In the Role Playing Resource Guide, the places where you can learn the Words are misidentified — the Guide says that the Words may be learned from the Pkunk, the Melnorme (instead of the Arilou) and the Spathi ships (instead of their Ruling Council).

Relevance to the plot
The Words have no effect on gameplay, but are an alternate way of learning the backstory of the Ur-Quan besides purchasing "historical data" from the Melnorme.

:This article is about the Star Control game. For information on the Star Control organization, see Star Control (Organization).
Star Control: Famous Battles of the Ur-Quan Conflict Volume IV was developed by Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III. It was released for the PC in 1990 and (in a somewhat cut-down form, and called simply Star Control) for the Commodore 64 in 1991 by Accolade. A port for the Sega Genesis was released by Ballistic in that same year.

Game play is a mixture of action and strategy. Players control fleets of ships and maneuver them about a star map, mining, colonizing, and fortifying planets while building up a fleet. When two (or more) enemy ships meet in orbit around a planet, they engage in a one-on-one dogfight to the death. This aspect of the game draws its inspiration from SPACEWAR! (written for the PDP-1).

Two things set Star Control apart from various other SPACEWAR! 'clones' - the aspect of strategy and the diversity of the ships (leading to higher quality game play). Each ship has a unique weapon and special ability, as well as varied stats that affect its performance in combat directly. Players must learn the strengths and weaknesses of each vessel and how to cope with them.

The game consisted of two sides: The Alliance of Free Stars, the good guys, and the Ur-Quan Hierarchy, the bad guys.

Listed here in the order they appear in the game are the Alliance races, their ships and their ship's value (in Starbucks):
Alliance Race || Ship || Starbucks
Mmrnmhrm || Transformer||align="center"|19
Arilou Lalee'lay || Skiff||align="center"|16
Shofixti || Scout||align="center"|5

Listed here in the order they appear in the game are the Hierarchy races and their ships:
Hierarchy Race || Ship || Starbucks
Ur-Quan || Dreadnought ||align="center"|30
Mycon || Podship ||align="center"|23
Spathi || Discriminator ||align="center"|18
Androsynth || Guardian ||align="center"|15
VUX || Intruder ||align="center"|12
Ilwrath || Avenger ||align="center"|10
Umgah || Drone ||align="center"|7

As shown here, the Earthlings were not the most powerful, nor the center of the game. They were just one of many races. Their Cruiser vessel, though deadly in the right hands, was slow and third to last in sheer value.

Star Control laid the foundations for Star Control II, a masterpiece of space exploration, combat, and diplomacy.

Star Control and Star Control II are full of nods, influences, and references to other science fiction (and some non-scifi) sources.

The QuasiSpace Portal Spawner is a device constructed by the Arilou Lalee'lay for The Flagship as a favor to The Captain during the Star Control II time period. It is a variant on the Arilou's standard QuasiSpace Portal Spawners, devices which use Inter-Dimensional Fatigue technology to create a temporary overlap between the dimensions of HyperSpace and QuasiSpace, allowing the Arilou to jump into QuasiSpace without going to the trouble of finding one of the rare, intermittently active natural portals. The process of creating such portals is extremely energy-intensive and dependent on the portal's size; this is probably one of the primary limiting factors leading to the relatively small size of the standard Arilou Skiff.

In order to allow The Captain to use such a Spawner on the much larger Flagship, the Arilou have to amplify a standard Spawner's power using a Warp Pod scavenged from the wreck of an Ur-Quan Kzer-Za Dreadnought at Alpha Pavonis. The Captain's scientists were unable to divine the internal workings of this Spawner. Of particular concern was the fact that the Spawner contained a sealed power supply, which makes it impossible for the Humans at the Earth Starbase to service or to gauge the lifetime of the technology that converts The Flagship's antimatter fuel into IDF rays. Although the service lifetime of the component turns out to be at least as long as that of The Flagship — owing to the latter's destruction — with no way as yet to predict the reliability of hybrid Spawners in the long term, the possible usefulness of equipping entire fleets with them (assuming the Arilou agreed to do so) remains in doubt.

The Druuge offer to trade three of their ships and to fill The Flagship's ship fuel tanks completely for The Captain's portal spawner, calling it a "vortex spawner"; arguably he could make a good deal by coming prepared with 14 empty double-capacity fuel tanks on his ship (getting almost 1400 fuel in the process which is worth 28000 resource units - more than triple the value of mining the entire Druuge sphere of influence!)

Gameplay notes
Sources of information
The Arilou Lalee'lay on Falayalaralfali intimate that they use Portal Spawners to transit between HyperSpace and QuasiSpace and offer to engineer one for The Flagship if offered the Ur-Quan Warp Pod.

Acquisition
The Portal Spawner can be obtained from the Arilou Lalee'lay on Falayalaralfali if The Captain has the Ur-Quan Warp Pod in possession.

Note: If The Captain threatens to destroy the Arilou Lalee'lay then they will not talk to him afterwards, making acquisition of the Portal Spawner impossible.

Uses
The Spawner generates a portal to QuasiSpace from anywhere in HyperSpace at the cost of 10 fuel units. This enables The Flagship to travel much quicker, saving both game time and real time.

Dabir: spelling/punctuation corrections

The Ur-Quan Slave War, also sometimes called the (Great) Crucible of Sentience, the Ur-Quan Conflict, or simply the Great War, is the original war between the Alliance of Free Stars and the Hierarchy of Battle Thralls, which lasted from 2098 to 2134 AD. To date it remains the greatest military conflict known to the histories of Alliance races. Indeed, the Alliance, the defining political entity of local space, only formed in reaction to the creation of the local Hierarchy of Battle Thralls, itself formed by the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za for the sole purpose of subjugating all known races, which, for a time, they succeeded in doing.

Beginning of Ur-Quan aggression
First detection
The first contact between the two sides occurred when the Chenjesu's extraordinary complex HyperWave sensing abilities detected the intrusion of a previously unknown species, the Ur-Quan, into the far antispinward reaches of known space, in the Ophiuchi constellation. The strange, discordant signal, which they were unable to translate at the time, was an Ur-Quan hunting cry, calling Lords toward an area of many developed sentient civilizations.

Thraddash, Umgah, and Ilwrath subjugation
The Chenjesu, unable to communicate with the Ur-Quan, failed to detect the Ur-Quan's first major battles with the Thraddash in Draconis. When the Thraddash had been fully subjugated, the Chenjesu watched as the Ur-Quan conquered the Umgah, who had until then maintained an apparently benign but aloof presence in the spacefaring community. The Ur-Quan then turned rimward and conquered the technologically underdeveloped Ilwrath. The Ilwrath's warlike culture proved fertile ground for Ur-Quan propaganda and with the benefit of new and improved technology tailored to their sadistic combat style, they greatly enhanced the now quite imposing Hierarchy military whose attention now turned to the ripe resources and population of Earth and the riches of the Chenjesu civilization at Procyon beside it.

Alliance-Hierarchy conflict
Creation of Alliance and expansion of Hierarchy
In response, the Chenjesu formed a makeshift military alliance with their friends, the Mmrnmhrm, to directly counter Ur-Quan aggression. Together the two races were able to temporarily repel the Ur-Quan, who, undeterred, turned aside from their defensive lines and began to send forces further spinward toward the Spathi and Androsynth. As they conquered those two races and began using the Spathi and Androsynth manpower and ships to bolster their fleets, the Chenjesu, realizing the enormity of the threat, began to negotiate with the most militarily powerful of the local races they knew of to form a true military alliance -- the Alliance of Free Stars -- capable of withstanding the growing Hierarchy of Battle Thralls. The two sides began to race to amass troops. The Chenjesu quickly gained the support of the military powerhouses of the Yehat and Shofixti, and initiated first contact in 2112 with the still-primitive Humans and their dormant military and industrial potential.

Unfortunately the Umgah had already accepted status as Battle Thralls rather than lose their freedom; after the Ur-Quan had quickly cowed the Spathi into submission, the Umgah, trifling with the Spathi for amusement, tricked them into likewise joining the Hierarchy, swelling their ranks with their numerous (if cowardly) forces. These combined forces made short work of the hopelessly outnumbered Androsynth and were able to harness the Androsynth's technological genius and deep hatred of the Humans in the Alliance to bolster their forces. On the Alliance side, the formal entry of the Humans to the Alliance in 2116 precipitated the unexpected appearance of the Arilou Lalee'lay, who appeared by unknown means at Earth's moon, Luna, and inexplicably asked to join the Alliance. Alliance authorities, unwilling to turn away allies, however mysterious, agreed, and the Arilou became a powerful wild card during the war.

VUX situation
After the subjugation of the Androsynth was completed, Ur-Quan forces began to increasingly pull away from the contested territory near Earth as incoming Yehat and Shofixti forces, bolstered by Earth's growing Star Control military, took greater tolls on the Hierarchy. More and more forces went spinward, now attacking the VUX, with whom the Yehat had only had sporadic and hostile contacts. An attempt to investigate Ur-Quan activity in this area and, if possible, recruit the VUX to help the Alliance cause ended disastrously in the famous incident of the Insult of Captain Jeffry L. Rand. Rand's blunder apparently destroyed any chance of VUX cooperation or even communication with Alliance forces, leaving them to helplessly watch as the Hierarchy conquered and absorbed them. Hierarchy forces then finally made contact with the home stars of the Yehat and Shofixti, but the fortifications there were far too strong for Hierarchy forces even after the assimilation of the VUX and their brilliant tactical genius Admiral ZEX.

Mycon and Syreen involvement
The Ur-Quan pulled out coreward, toward Brahe; no known races lived there, and Alliance forces dared speculate that the Hierarchy was now satisfied and choosing to end hostilities and retreat. Unfortunately, it turned out that the Mycon race, which had existed undetected until now, had openly initiated communications with the Ur-Quan asking to voluntary join the Hierarchy. The Alliance were unable to determine why, only knowing that the Mycon's unique Podship technology greatly multiplied the sheer firepower potential of the Ur-Quan forces, making them far more offensively powerful. At the last moment, the advance of the Hierarchy through Mycon space forced the flight of the also previously unknown neighbors to the Mycon, the Syreen, who had been wandering in fleets of habitats and vessels since the recent destruction of their home planet Syra. Flying desperately just ahead of the Mycon advance and increasingly harried by raids from the unscrupulous VUX, they were forced to join the Alliance despite their extreme military weakness; though their fleet was small and primitive, their unique form of hypnotic technology proved an effective tactical device to help reduce the Hierarchy's advantage.

With no other major races willing or able to join either side, there was nothing left for it but increasing escalation of hostilities, fought along what the Alliance termed the Coreward Front running through the Indi and Mira constellations. The struggle continued for over ten years, during which many legendary battles were fought, such as the famous Battle at Draco. The Hierarchy's apparent military advantages never quite allowed them to gain a permanent foothold against the embattled Alliance.

Defeat of the Alliance
Chenjesu and Mmrnmhrm
Finally, in 2134, the Ur-Quan successfully pushed the Alliance back beyond Raynet, and immediately seized the opportunity this gave them. Though Procyon was heavily defended by the Chenjesu, the Ur-Quan finally chose to use the decisive ace in the hole they had reserved until then, the Sa-Matra. The powerful Chenjesu fleet was helpless against it, and the Chenjesu and Mmrnmhrm's main defense fleets had no time to even send more than a few scattered distress transmissions before the Sa-Matra utterly destroyed them. Their homeworld devastated, the Chenjesu leaders of the Alliance attempted to send a transmission -- never received -- advocating a new strategy of retreat and surrender, taking advantage of Ur-Quan largesse in allowing conquered races to live settled and mostly uninterfered-with lives as fallow slaves to somehow develop a covert resistance among slave-shielded species and seek a technological answer to the Sa-Matra's power. The Mmrnmhrm, lacking their own homeworld, chose to join the Chenjesu in becoming fallow slaves at Procyon II and integrate themselves into their plans.

Humans
Following the subjugation at Procyon II, Earth was next in line for attack, and the Humans were quickly defeated by a massive, multilateral attack. Without the support of the powerful Chenjesu and Mmrnmhrm, the remaining defenders of the Sol system had no chance of standing against a combined attack by the entire Hierarchy. The Star Control forces, soon separated from their allies, were pushed back all the way within the Sol system, but heroically continued to fight until their entire force had been destroyed; finally, with all their material and troops gone, the Humans agreed to surrender terms, and elected to go through the pain of becoming fallow rather than fighting for their enemies.

Syreen and Arilou
Seeing the Alliance in tatters, the Shofixti and Yehat rushed back spinward to defend their home systems, leaving no one at the Coreward Front but the meager Arilou and Syreen fleets. Expecting a final defense against the Hierarchy, the Syreen were shocked to find the Arilou wordlessly scattering and vanishing, leaving them no choice but to surrender to the Hierarchy as well (possibly following the final defense at Raynet), choosing fallow status and being relocated to a new world, Gaia, in the Betelgeuse system.

Shofixti and Yehat
The Hierarchy now turned spinward again toward the two hardest nuts to crack, the martial cultures of the Shofixti and Yehat. As the Hierarchy reached the Delta Gorno system, the Yehat, who had prepared a desperate strategy to use their outnumbered fleets as a tactical wedge to divide and weaken the Hierarchy forces, suddenly withdrew under orders from the Veep-Neep Queen, who had seemingly lost her heart for combat. Against the protests of the Starship Clans, the Yehat left the Shofixti to fend for themselves; without Yehat support, there was no strategic possibility of even forcing significant casualties on the Hierarchy. The Shofixti fleet nonetheless fought valiantly, using the only weapon they had left, their self-destructing Glory Devices, to destroy Ur-Quan squadron after squadron. Even so, their entire fleet had soon been consumed and their homeworld left undefended; unknown to either the Yehat or the Hierarchy they had prepared one final act of defiance. As the bulk of the Hierarchy fleet stationed itself in Delta Gorno to put down the Shofixti resistance, the surviving Shofixti lowered a Precursor Bomb into their sun and activated it, causing the star to suddenly flare and flood the entire system with radiation -- a massive re-creation of the Shofixti Glory Device. All Shofixti forces had been called back to the system to participate in the final defense, and with a few scattered exceptions the entirety of their race was killed by this Ultimate Glory Device; even so, a third of the Ur-Quan fleet had been taken with them.

Unfortunately, this was not enough to change the outcome of the war. Shocked and horrified by the Shofixti's fate, the Starship Clans' protests were fruitless; unwilling to undermine the cultural source of her throne's legitimacy, the Queen finally ended the war by formally surrendering to the Ur-Quan and, moreover, volunteering the Yehat's services as Battle Thralls to prevent the dismantling of their military. Official hostilities now ceased, and the Ur-Quan, after putting into place the various Hierarchy Starbases as signs of dominance over the fallow slaves and implementing maintenance and control systems among the Battle Thralls, began to turn to their own concerns, vanishing from public sight, it is now known, to begin the Doctrinal Conflict against the Kohr-Ah.

Post-war events
The interbellum period lasted twenty years, and no one outside of what had been the special ops division of Star Control, Corridor Nine, knew of a secret mission that had been sent to the Vela system just before war's end to investigate strange Precursor relics there. Cut off from the Alliance forces, this expedition had become the makeshift Vela I or Unzervalt colony. Eventually the ancient Precursor technology there was used to construct a functional Precursor vessel, later to be known as The Flagship. Captained by a young man from Unzervalt, usually called simply The Captain, this vessel emerged from Vela to restart guerrilla actions against the Ur-Quan and overthrow them in the events of Star Control II.

Campaigns
The Campaigns of the Ur-Quan Slave War are as follows (taken from Star Control for Genesis, in rough chronological order):
* First Encounter - When spheres of influence meet, battle is inevitable.
::In a far sector along the Coreward Frontier, an Alliance resource development team has encountered a small Hierarchy ravage/reclaim unit. Both commanders face a similar decision: fortify their holdings then expand into enemy space, or make an immediate charge into the enemy's zone, hoping to disrupt his plans before they come to fruition.
* The Art Of War - Match your strength against your enemy's weakness.
::TO ALL COMMANDERS! It has come to the attention of the leadership that certain ships are especially vulnerable to attacks by particular enemy vessels. In your new assignment, beware of these fatal match-ups as you seek to destroy the enemy's Starbase. Consider multi-species, wingbeing pairs. That is all . . .
* Exterminate! - The Hierarchy must curb rampant Shofixti breeding!
::Perhaps the bravest species in the Alliance is the marsupial Shofixti. Though young as a sentient species, and near feral in psychology, no other race in the Free Stars is so quick and efficient at exploring and exploiting an uncharted region of space. One such Shofixti-built zone has attracted the attention of the Hierarchy, in the form of an Ur-Quan Dreadnought. Its mission: a seek-and-destroy sortie to eliminate all Alliance colony worlds. The only way the Shofixti can emerge victorious is to destroy the Dreadnought before all their colony worlds are lost.
* VUX Incursion - A VUX task force attacks an Alliance StarBase.
::Early in the Ur-Quan conflict a stupid mistake caused the VUX to side with the Hierarchy, when a foolish Earthling captain uttered "That's one ugly sucker!" without realizing how good VUX translation systems were. The enraged VUX, a tad touchy about their appearance, proceeded to mount a large assault force to destroy the Alliance StarBase.
* Proving Ground - The Spathi fleet meets the Mmrnmhrm in deep space.
::The newly conquered Spathi are commanded by their Ur-Quan overlords to capture the Mmrnmhrm Star Cluster mines as proof of their worth. The cowardly Spathi have no choice but to engage the tricky Mmrnmhrm in a pitched battle over a thinly populated region of space. The Spathi goal is to destroy all the Mmrnmhrm mining worlds, which supply a large portion of the Alliance income. The Mmrnmhrm must prevent this, at any cost.
* Lost in Space - A solitary Chenjesu must survive a harsh universe.
::A prototype ultra-stardrive has accidentally sent a Chenjesu Broodhome deep into hierarchy territory. Recognizing that survival is the most important consideration, the Chenjesu captain has planted a colony. Contact comes soon after . . .
* Beginner's Luck - A lone syreen must prevent Androsynth deployment.
::A single Syreen patrolling a distant star cluster comes across an Androsynth development. The newly commissioned Syreen commander decides to engage the Androsynth, thereby ending the threat, and quite possibly winning a quick promotion. The Syreen commander must quickly defeat the Androsynth before he can build additional ships. The Androsynth Alpha+ Commander must choose between defending its colony world, and its Starbase. Time is on the Androsynths' side, and the enemy must come to him.
* Escalation - A war of production.
::In an unexplored sector, the Hierarchy and Alliance detect each others presence from their newly constructed starbases. Though alone and vulnerable, each starbase has a substantial initial budget with which to build a new star fleet. Long range deep-radar scans of this region confirm the presence of Precursor artifacts and installations!
* Target Earth - Planet Earth comes under surprise attack.
::The Earthlings, at first a minor annoyance for the Hierarchy, have become an increasingly serious threat. Mass-produced Cruisers deployed from the Detroit Ship Yards have become the backbone of the Alliance fleet. The Hierarchy launches a daring attack to crush the threat once and for all. A wave of Ilwrath ambushes are followed by the massive Ur-Quan Dreadnoughts, with Androsynth and Umgah reinforcements close behind. Earth's Cruisers, with the help of a few visiting Alliance ships, stage a desperate battle for Earth's survival.
* Syreen's Song - A Syreen recruitment drive begins.
::The Syreen are looking for a few good beings, and have decided to begin their hunt deep in hierarchy space. As colony after colony vanishes, the outraged Hierarchy strikes back, assembling a task force to decimate the Syreen. The Hierarchy must strike with lightning speed. To hesitate is to face a Syreen force replete with captured colonists.
* Mushroom Cloud - A bold Alliance attack on the Mycons.
::Priority One Alpha, Visual Receptors Only: Star Control General Staff and Warship Captains . . . As is well known, the number of Mycon Podships in the theater of operations is increasing at an alarming rate. At last we have found the source! 14 solar hours ago, Long-range scouts uncovered a previously uncharted cluster of Mycon colonies. If these colonies are allowed to survive, the Mycons will overrun this quadrant within the month. These colonies must be destroyed at any cost! All Alliance vessels within 30 parsecs are ordered to join the effort. This is a Must Win situation. Good Luck!
* The Nebula - The Hierarchy assaults the Yehat homeworlds.
::After an exhaustive search, Ur-Quan spies have discovered the nebula which holds the secret homeworlds of the Yehat. The unsuspecting cluster is targeted for destruction. The inhabitants must use the flexibility of their many colonies and substantial cash reserves to defend against the Hierarchy's genocidal attack.
* Onslaught - The Ur-Quan offensive begins!
::An Armada of 6 Dreadnoughts approaches an established Alliance area of space. Can the Alliance withstand the onslaught in this thinly held star cluster? The Hierarchy seeks to conquer this region as a stepping stone to the core of the Free Stars, and the defeat of the entire Alliance fleet. The Alliance must annihilate the Ur-Quan menace.
* Counter Attack - The Alliance strikes back!
::For the moment the table is turned, and the Alliance has made a strong counter attack against newly established Hierarchy holdings. Multiple Alliance star fleets move through Hierarchy space towards a final rendevous for battle in Draco. An Alliance commander arrives in enemy space with a starbase and a small task force. Additional vessels must be commissioned immediately in order to mount an offensive. The Hierarchy sector-chief must attempt to hold out until the income from its mining worlds allow it to build enough forces to repel the attack.
* Total War - Two full fleets face off in a battle to the death!
::GENERAL ORDER 1216: For maximum flexibility in forthcoming combat situations, it is hereby designated that war fleets be composed of a mixture of ships from each of the available races. Due to shortages in raw materials, starbases are not available. Concentrate on making good use of Colonies and Fortifications, as well as your knowledge of ship-vs-ship tactical advantages. That is all . . .

Beginning of Ur-Quan agression

In response, the Chenjesu formed a makeshift military alliance with their friends, the Mmrnmhrm to directly counter Ur-Quan aggression.

Captained by a young man from Unzervalt, usually called simply The Captain, this vessel emerged from Vela to restart guerrilla actions against the Ur-Quan and overthrow them in the events of Star Control II.
* Onslaught - The Ur-Quan offensive begins!
That is all . . .

__NOTOC__

The Utwig Jugger is one of the most dangerous ships in our region of space, thanks to its unique weapons and shield systems.

Navigation
The Jugger is surprisingly fast for its size, although its acceleration is weak. But it is also outfitted with a set of amazingly powerful turning jets, and is capable of coming about as quickly as a vessel less than half its size.

Armament
Primary
The Jugger's main weapon is an array of six forward-facing, "energy spear" cannons powered by an extremely efficient combat dynamo system. With it, the cannons have a virtually limitless supply of energy, and are able to fire without drawing any energy from the combat batteries. With a moderate rate of fire and damage, a Jugger can obliterate most other ships with a few salvos. Each cannon "spear" in a salvo will kill one member of the enemy's crew upon striking the ship.

Secondary
The Jugger is equipped with a unique shielding system. It is capable of absorbing an almost limitless amount of punishment from both kinetic and energy-based attacks, and it in fact converts this energy for storage in its combat batteries! However, the vessel is not capable of replenishing energy on its own, so if the combat batteries run out, the shields are no longer usable. The only way for a Jugger to get its energy levels back up then is by leaving the combat theater; a Jugger always enters battle with its batteries at half of its maximum capacity.

Tactical Overview
The Jugger's shields consume energy when used, but they absorb energy from enemy attacks. Therefore, a skilled Jugger pilot who uses his shields only when necessary can keep his batteries fully charged and minimize damage to his ship. A corollary to this is that one should keep an eye on "skirmisher" weapons that require more energy to shield against than will be regained by shielding against them. Such weapons can slowly bleed the batteries dry, leaving captains in a vulnerable position.

The Jugger's massive size and poor acceleration make gravity wells particularly dangerous, since at full speed they can be difficult to avoid. This, combined with the excellent turning rate of the ship and unique weapons systems, make pillboxing a wildly popular tactic.

When fighting a computer-controlled Ur-Quan Dreadnought or Kohr-Ah Marauder, a most effective strategy is a full-on frontal assault. The computer makes a policy of firing as fast as it can, so on approach, absorb all the punishment they can dish out, and when their fuel tanks run dry, take a potshot or two from point-blank range. As soon as they get enough energy to fire back, they will, so keep the shields at the ready, and whittle them down to nothing with impunity. Indeed, some consider this ship to be more effective against Dreadnoughts AND Marauders than even the almighty Chmmr Avatar! It is worth noting, however, that a lone Dreadnought fighter represents a hole in this strategy, as their individual attacks do not appreciably replenish the Jugger's shields, and once shield energy is exhausted the Jugger can easily be picked apart.

One thing to note is that a Jugger's shields do not absorb energy from an Androsynth Guardian in its Blazer form. While the Jugger won't take damage from the Guardian's Blazer form, it also cannot re-energize its Batteries from it. It can, however, re-energize from the molecular acid spheres the Guardian fires, just like it might from any other standard projectile.

Strong Against
Umgah Drone: All an Utwig captain has to do is allow the Drone to fire upon the Jugger for a while, allowing the Jugger to fully replenish its batteries. After this, the Utwig captain merely has to get out of the Umgah's effective range, and rip the Drone to pieces. Even if the Drone keeps its antimatter cone up, it is possible to get into a position where the outer spears can fire around the cone.

Kohr-Ah Marauder: As noted above, a direct frontal assault is often the best tactic. The Marauder is not quite fast enough to outrun the Jugger on its own, and well-timed use of the energy shield will allow the Jugger to withstand both the homing mines and the F.R.I.E.D. without damage. Once weapons range is achieved, there is little the Marauder can do to prevent the Jugger's endless salvoes from reducing it to scrap. The Jugger captain must remain alert, however, for any already-fired mines that may be slowly closing in; concentrating solely on shielding against direct shots can lead to indirect casualties.

Ur-Quan Dreadnought: As noted above, a direct frontal assault is usually the best tactic. An AI Dreadnought will rarely deploy fighters against a Jugger with shield energy, as the energy spears can easily strike them down. The fusion blasts are good for recovering a Jugger's shields, as they deal the highest amount of damage/firing rate and thus recover the fastest amount of energy in the shortest time of any weapon in the game except the Hellbore Cannon (full game only).

Mycon Podship: The slow firing rate and high visibility of the Mycon's projectiles mean that an Utwig can usually leave this battle with no damage, although their very close max speeds (although the Utwig's is slightly higher) mean that this battle can take a while, especially if the Mycon is allowed to regenerate.

Tenuous Against
Chenjesu Broodhome: The Broodhome's DOGIs can rapidly drain an Utwig's battery, leaving it defenseless and forced to resort to a probably-fatal frontal charge. However, the DOGIs are slow-moving, as well as being a big target, and if the Jugger can take them down the battle will usually only go one way.

Weak Against
Melnorme Trader: The Trader's confusion ray, in addition to causing the Jugger to rotate uncontrollably, prevents use of the shield as long as the Jugger is affected, allowing the Trader to pick it apart with relative ease, the fast turning rate and slow firing rate of the Jugger meaning that the captain finds it difficult to strike accurately even with timed shots.

Orz Nemesis: When faced with the Nemesis's Marines an Utwig captain is faced with two choices: Allow them inside the ship and hope or consume valuable shield energy to deflect them and attempt to shoot the relatively small targets down with the widely-spread energy spears. The space marines do not restore the Jugger's battery if deflected.

A slave shield is one of the most significant and recognizable technologies in the galaxy. Developed after the Ur-Quan Slave Revolt by the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za, it is a highly robust, self-maintaining force field implanted around a planet's atmosphere that blocks the passage of all physical objects. It also filters and scatters all radiation that passes through it, causing a visual pulsating red halo effect around the planet, and more importantly scrambling all electromagnetic and even HyperWave communications to and from the surface. It is their universal device for humanely confining other species to prevent them ever becoming a threat to the Kzer-Za's survival and freedom. However, the Kzer-Za, for partially unknown reasons (most likely their unwillingness to use the Sa-Matra), allow a Hierarchy of un-slave-shielded Battle Thralls in contested regions of space.

First used on the Faz homeworld, since then thousands of worlds have been slave-shielded by the Kzer-Za.

Only the Ur-Quan themselves were capable of disabling slave shields; the Kzer-Za had some method for locally neutralizing a slave shield that they used for travel and communication with fallow slave worlds in the Hierarchy, and apparently were able to apply this method globally to un-slave-shield a world if they deemed the race on that world unsafe and necessary to pre-emptively destroy. The Kohr-Ah possessed a similar method; though the agreement between the two races during the Doctrinal Conflict prevents them from using it against worlds conquered by the Kzer-Za, the Death March events indicate that they are fully prepared to use it to destroy the populations of all slave-shielded worlds should they be victorious in the conflict.1

Unfortunately for the Kzer-Za, slave shields were not as perfect a solution to the problem of eternally preventing traffic and communication from a planet as they once thought. Very sensitive HyperWave receivers are able to pick up transmissions from across a slave shield, if the message is sent with enough power; the New Alliance of Free Stars was able to communicate with the slave-shielded Chenjesu and Mmrnmhrm this way, thanks to the Chenjesu's highly refined natural HyperWave-sensing anatomy. Moreover, the Chmmr developed a method to "crack" slave shields, using a large grid of satellites to introduce disruptions across the slave-shield's surface until it dissipates.2 After the Ur-Quan defeat during the second Doctrinal Conflict, this method was used to free the Alliance races that had been slave-shielded in the aftermath of the Ur-Quan Slave War.

The only species known to have duplicated the Kzer-Za slave shield technology is the Spathi. Their entrance into the New Alliance of Free Stars gave them the opportunity they needed to study the slave shield around Earth and duplicate it, which took them only six months, after which they retreated to obscurity and safety trapped on the surface of Spathiwa, securely protected against any evil space monsters that might decide to eat them.
