The Flagship refers to the Precursor vessel flown by The Captain in Star Control II. It is also known as the Vindicator, the default name on the 3DO version of Star Control II, though the name can be changed during the game. The name SIS (an abbreviation for Super Integrated Starship) is also sometimes used; it is how the ship is referred to internally in the code, but never in the actual game or manuals.

Despite its immense size by both Alliance and Hierarchy standards, the Flagship is actually a Precursor tugboat designed as a multi-purpose "workhorse".1 The ship proper is a framework created by the automated Precursor base on Unzervalt. Separate modules can be attached to this framework. The modules have varying effects from increasing the ship's maneuverability and speed to storing crew and other supplies. The ship can also be fitted with a host of weapons and energy systems as well as having docking space for up to 12 other smaller ships.

This ship becomes the flagship of the New Alliance of Free Stars and is integral in that group's completion of its ultimate objective. Sadly, it had to be sacrificed to destroy the Sa-Matra and thereby end the Ur-Quan threat, by delivering and providing additional power to the Chmmr-improved Utwig Bomb.

__NOTOC__

The Utwig Jugger is one of the most dangerous ships in our region of space, thanks to its unique weapons and shield systems.

Navigation
The Jugger is surprisingly fast for its size, although its acceleration is weak. But it is also outfitted with a set of amazingly powerful turning jets, and is capable of coming about as quickly as a vessel less than half its size.

Armament
Primary
The Jugger's main weapon is an array of six forward-facing, "energy spear" cannons powered by an extremely efficient combat dynamo system. With it, the cannons have a virtually limitless supply of energy, and are able to fire without drawing any energy from the combat batteries. With a moderate rate of fire and damage, a Jugger can obliterate most other ships with a few salvos. Each spear kills 1 crew members per hit.

Secondary
The Jugger is equipped with a unique shielding system. It is capable of absorbing an almost limitless amount of punishment from both kinetic and energy-based attacks, and it in fact converts this energy for storage in its combat batteries! However, the vessel is not capable of replenishing energy on its own, so if the combat batteries run out, the shields are no longer usable. The only way for a Jugger to get its energy levels back up then is by leaving the combat theater; a Jugger always enters battle with its batteries at half of its maximum capacity.

Tactical Overview
The Jugger's shields consume energy when used, but they absorb energy from enemy attacks. Therefore, a skilled Jugger pilot who uses his shields only when necessary can keep his batteries fully charged and minimize damage to his ship. A corollary to this is that one should keep an eye on "skirmisher" weapons that require more energy to shield against than will be regained by shielding against them. Such weapons can slowly bleed the batteries dry, leaving captains in a vulnerable position.

The Jugger's massive size and poor acceleration make gravity wells particularly dangerous, since at full speed they can be difficult to avoid. This, combined with the excellent turning rate of the ship and unique weapons systems, make pillboxing a wildly popular tactic.

When fighting a computer-controlled Ur-Quan Dreadnought or Kohr-Ah Marauder, a most effective strategy is a full-on frontal assault. The computer makes a policy of firing as fast as it can, so on approach, absorb all the punishment they can dish out, and when their fuel tanks run dry, take a potshot or two from point-blank range. As soon as they get enough energy to fire back, they will, so keep the shields at the ready, and whittle them down to nothing with impunity. Indeed, some consider this ship to be more effective against Dreadnoughts AND Marauders than even the almighty Chmmr Avatar! It is worth noting, however, that Dreadnought fighters represent a hole in this strategy, as their attacks do not appreciably replenish the Jugger's shields, and once shield energy is exhausted the Jugger can easily be picked apart.

One thing to note is that a Jugger's shields do not absorb energy from an Androsynth Guardian in its Blazer form. While the Jugger won't take damage from the Guardian's Blazer form, it also cannot re-energize its Batteries from it. It can, however, re-energize from the molecular acid spheres the Guardian fires, just like it might from any other standard projectile.

Good Against
Umgah Drone. All an Utwig captain has to do is allow the Drone to fire upon the Jugger for a while, allowing the Jugger to fully replenish its batteries. After this, the Utwig captain merely has to get out of the Umgah's effective range, and rip the Drone to pieces.

Kohr-Ah Marauder. As noted above, a direct frontal assault is often the best tactic. The Marauder is not quite fast enough to outrun the Jugger on its own, and well-timed use of the energy shield will allow the Jugger to withstand both the homing mines and the F.R.I.E.D. without damage. Once weapons range is achieved, there is little the Marauder can do to prevent the Jugger's endless salvoes from reducing it to scrap. The Jugger captain must remain alert, however, for any already-fired mines that may be slowly closing in; concentrating solely on shielding against direct shots can lead to indirect casualties.

__NOTOC__

The Thraddash Torch is the pride and joy of Thraddash Culture Nineteen. It is very small, but its maneuverability and its powerful afterburners make it a serious contender even against AI-controlled large ships.

Navigation
The Torch is a small, somewhat slow ship with excellent maneuverability and acceleration.

Armament
Primary
The Torch's main weapon is the medium-range Mark-VI blaster. Its four-megawatt energy discharge is pretty weak (1 per hit), but it does have some surprising characteristics, such as resistance to the Earthling Cruiser's point-defense lasers, and the Umgah Drone's anti-matter cone.
In the right hands, it can be a quite effective weapon.

Secondary
The secondary 'weapon' of the Torch isn't truly a weapon, but a secondary propulsion system known as the Reeunk Afterburner. The Reeunk afterburner accelerates the Torch to incredible speeds and leaves in its wake a fiery trail of ionized plasma that, while still hot, can cripple enemy ships in seconds should one be following too closely. Each of these fiery balls kill 2 crew members when hit, though the Torch is unaffected. It is so useful in an offensive capacity that most Thraddash pilots consider it to be the primary weapon on the Torch. However, human-controlled opponents will generally avoid the trail, thus transforming it into a simple evasion ability.

The Reeunk Afterburner is a relatively recent addition to the Torch. Earlier revisions of this ship were armed only with the Mark-VI Blaster and therefore deemed too ineffective for combat by the Ur-Quan. Once they became Battle Thralls, the Thraddash were ordered to "guard the rear" by staying in their home territory. Now that their ships have been improved, the Thraddash would love nothing more than to try them out against another race and thus prove their worth to the Ur-Quan.

Tactical Overview
The most popular tactic employed with this ship against the AI is to "cast a net" with the afterburners such that the enemy ship flies into it and takes damage. Against large capital ships, this is no problem, but against more maneuverable ships, luring them near a gravity well might be required first.

Skilled Torch pilots can easily goad AI Androsynth Guardians into blazer mode with blaster fire, forcing them to head straight into the exhaust trails while the Torch outruns them. The afterburner is also good at frying the ZapSats of any Avatar that makes the mistake of chasing after it or flying towards it. Against the Earthling Cruiser, the strategy is quite straightforward: close in quickly and pound incessantly it with the blaster. Point-defense laser is useless against it, and if you keep your distance you can dodge the return fire from the Cruiser quite easily; you can deal a decent amount of damage to the Cruiser before being blown to bits.

The Torch is most useful against the Slylandro Probes in single player. Wait for the Probe to get close, then activate the afterburner, the AI should cause it to follow resulting in it taking maximum damage and exploding. Using this technique, it's possible to get ally with the Thraddash early, and then by using their ships build up RU simply by hunting probes.

The AI allows the Ur-Quan Dreadnought to launch fighters against Torches, even though the afterburner destroys them as effectively as any point defense. Although the computer-controlled Orz Nemesis has the same weakness, the battle becomes more challenging after it has launched all the marines it can spare.

The Melnorme Trader is a tricky enemy, but gets almost impossible to beat if it hits the Torch with its confusion ray. This neutralizes the Torch's afterburner, its best weapon, and method of escape.

A Yehat Terminator can eliminate any number of Torches, if flown by a skilled player (usually by orbiting a gravity well — or "pillboxing" against the AI), but a Torch can also easily take out a Terminator. What matters here is how well the Terminator pilot uses its force shield.

Fsi-Dib: /* Primary */ included weapon damage information

__NOTOC__

The Syreen Penetrator is lightly crewed and not terribly powerful in terms of offensive weaponry, but it is able to use "wiles" to strengthen itself while weakening enemy ships. With the Mycon Podship and the Pkunk Fury, the Penetrator is one of the few ships able to come out of battle stronger than they went in.

Navigation
The Penetrator has a good turn-rate and a fair speed but suffers from a somewhat lacking acceleration. Its shape, center of gravity and turn-rate can be masterfully combined into an orbiting maneuver, during which the Penetrator circles a planet until it finds the direction it wants, so as to use the Gravity-whip maneuver.

Armament
Primary
The Penetrator's primary weapon is a weak, forward-firing weapon with a fair range and acceptable firing rate. Normally it is used for nothing but finishing off a Psi-resistant captain. This weapon is more commonly known as a "Particle Beam Stiletto", or alternatively as a "light Electron Dagger". Each hit kills 2 crew members.

Secondary
To compensate for its lack of offensive power, the Penetrator captain employs the "Syreen Song", a short-range hypnosis field designed to lure enemy crew from their ships via the airlocks. The effectiveness of the Syreen Song decreases with distance. When the ships are right next to eachother, eight crew members may desert, but a ship will never be abandoned altogether. If the Penetrator picks up the crew, they will willingly serve alongside the Syreen as members of the Penetrator's crew; if the enemy ship reclaims their crew, they are able to counteract the effects of the hypnosis field -- at least for a while. During the war, crews on board Syreen ships became a surreal pastiche of alien races, with Ilwrath, VUX, Spathi and others working dutifully side by side with human volunteers under the command of beautiful Syreen officers.

The "Syreen Song" has no effect on non-sentient beings like the Slylandro Probe.

Tactical Overview
Against most ships, the tactic is pretty straightforward -- close in quickly, evade incoming fire, and use the "Syreen Song" to bolster your ranks and weaken the enemy's. Once you have made the enemy's crew your own, finish them off with a few quick shots.
Slow ships are the prefereable targets for Penetrator captains.
Ships with good turn rates and/or good firing rates are what Syreen captains fear most.

Strengths
*When fighting a Mycon Podship, the Penetrator can outrun a plasmoid but only if already at its best speed. If the Podship tries to regenerate lost crew, the Penetrator should hold patiently and let the Mycon send more crew as prey for the Syreen Song.
*The Ilwrath Avenger is also easy prey for the Penetrator, as the Syreen Song is effective even when the Avenger is cloaked (thus also serving to reveal the Avenger's position), and the Penetrator's engines can easily keep the ship out of the Avenger's attack range. A human-controlled Avenger will try orbiting the planet, forcing the Penetrator to close in, then using a Leyland Gravity Whip, which will prove much more dangerous for the Penetrator. Worth noting is that the crew pulled near the planet will crash on it and be lost for both sides.
*Chenjesu Broodhome ships are quite pained trying to keep the Penetrator off their back.
*The Earthling Cruisers' cumbersome nukes are easily dodged by the slick Penetrator, and at close range the dismal recharge rate usually forces the Cruiser captain into a "Scorched Earth" tactic - shooting his own crew with point-defense lasers rather than seeing them aboard the Penetrator.
*After mastering the art of evading the Kohr-Ah spinning blades (which is a bit harder than with the other maneuverable ships because turning will expose the larger lateral area to hits from the Marauder), Penetrators can prove a nasty surprise for the Marauder captain.
*Umgah Drones are especially easy opponents. All the Penetrator has to do is go in front of it (so that it is not touched by the antimatter cone) and use the Syreen Song to lure all its crew out, then fly around the ship to catch them. The Drone often accidentally kills the crew, flying towards the Penetrator with the cone always on. Using the retro-propulsion system is not recommended for the Drone, as it exposes the ship to the Penetrator's particle beam stiletto; the Penetrator will anyway be forced to fly into the Drone's cone to kill the ship's last crew member.
*Thraddash Torches are essentially flying crew carriers for the Penetrator. Their speed and turn rate is fast enough to totally avoid the Thraddash's fire, and the Torch is too slow to effectively dodge the Stiletto.

Weaknesses
*Being the only maneuverable ship with a longer length than width, the Penetrator is especially vulnerable when turning (especially against slow-firing ships with powerful weapons such as the Dreadnought, the Marauder or the Broodhome).
*The Shofixti Scout, with its Glory Device.
*Nimble, quick firing ships such as the X-Form in laser form, the Utwig Jugger and the Yehat Terminator.
*It is also easy prey for the Slylandro Probe, with the Probe's superior maneuverability and invulnerability to the Song.

__NOTOC__

The Supox Blade is a largely underrated ship. Its rapid fire capability can pound an unwary enemy and the lateral thrusting, when properly used, is nearly as good as the Arilou Skiff's Hyperspace shunts in evading shots.

Navigation
The Blade is quick and agile with a fair turn-rate, allowing it to considerably hamper enemy targeting efforts. Its slender form makes it harder to hit her.

Armament
Primary
The corrosive "glob weapon" may cause a small amount of damage per shot, but it compensates for this with a high firing rate. Even when out of battery, the gun’s firing rate remains high and its range, equalling the Ur-Quan Dreadnought and the Syreen Penetrator, can prove deadly.

Each hit kills 1 crew member.

Secondary
The Blade is outfitted with an advanced maneuvering system that enables it to change course without the need to turn. It takes a lot of practice to master the tricky maneuvering system, but when correctly used, it can be used to sidestep incoming fire or strafe into a firing position. It is especially effective against slow-firing ships such as the Dreadnought or Kohr-Ah Marauder.

Tactical Overview
The Blade is a fair adversary that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Strong against: The lumbering VUX Intruder is easy prey for the agile Blade, provided its initial 'ambush' can be avoided. The Ilwrath Avenger is also easily dealt with by the Blade, even when cloaked, as the Blade captain need only slip backwards and continually fire into the space where he knows the Avenger to be. Careful use of side- and backstepping, combined with the persistant rapid-fire primary weapon allows the Blade to make short work of Marines sent by Orz Nemesis ships or Fighters sent by Ur-Quan Dreadnoughts, rendering them useless.

Tenuous against: The Chmmr Avatar can neutralize almost all incoming projectiles, but it is possible for a skilled and patient Blade captain to wear down the Zapsats, and once they are gone, the superior range of the Blade's weapons can win the day. The shield of the Utwig Jugger can be tricky at first, but utilizing an irregular stream of fire can allow shots to either slip in between shield activations, or trick the Utwig into shielding when there is no fire incoming, thus draining its batteries; once the shield is exhausted, the Blade can pick the Jugger apart. Mycon Podship homing plasmoids can inflict fearsome damage, as the Blade must close to fairly close range in order to engage, but skillful maneuvering can allow a Blade captain to confound the plasmoids while peppering the Podship with a steady stream of globules.

Weak against: Chenjesu Broodhome – The crystalline shards produced by detonation of the Broodhome's main projectile can make lateral-sidestepping a real problem. The Arilou Skiff, Slylandro Probe and Pkunk Fury are all equal or superior to the Blade in speed, and can effect quick hit and run attacks. The auto-aiming nature of the Probe and Skiff weapons make them especially dangerous; the straight-firing Fury slightly less so.

__NOTOC__

The multi-colored Spathi Eluder, formerly known as the Discriminator (and sometimes called a Voidship by the Spathi), remains the bulk of the Spathi fleet even 20 years after the War. Its construction, though seemingly chaotic, is carefully designed to mimic its crew's natural attributes: paranoia, elusiveness, and cowardice.

From the outside, the Eluder consists of many bubble-shaped, solid-colored cabins joined together by smaller white corridors. The intention of having so many large seemingly crew-filled projections is partly to obfuscate enemy into targeting the decoy cabins and to direct enemy fire away from the main bridge. However, in practice, enemy weapons seem to incapacitate the same amount of crew no matter where the Eluder is damaged.

Navigation
The Eluder is one of the fastest ships in the galaxy, both in top speed and acceleration, and has a turning radius an Arilou Lalee'lay would be jealous of. Though agility would be a mighty boon for most brute force fighter ships, the Eluder is anything but brute... or a force... or even a fighter. The fact is that thrusters' primary use isn't for speeding into battle, but rather for speeding away from it (from this perspective, the Eluder performs admirably). The helm of the Eluder is quite large and is typically manned by two Spathi at once, but in times of emergency (mainly when he's the only crew member left) the captain usually whips into a adrenaline-filled panicked frenzy and finds the ability to man both halves of the helm nearly simultaneously by himself!

Armament
Primary
The Eluder's main weaponry consists of a quick-firing, short-range, low-impact plasma pellet that is great for sneak attacks, guerilla tactics, or just to finish off a severely-handicapped adversary (which are the only direct attacks a Spathi would consider). The plasma pellet is otherwise limited in its usefulness. Each hit kill 1 crew member.

Secondary
The secondary weaponry epitomizes the essence of true Spathi-ness due to its ability to do the most damage while the Eluder is in full retreat. The Backwards Utility Tracking Torpedo (B.U.T.T.) is a medium-range, low-impact conventional space torpedo with a good automated guidance system and moderate speed and maneuverability. Fired from the rear of the craft, B.U.T.T. missiles do most of the dirty work in the dogfights as Eluders make their way away from the fray. Enemy captains foolish enough to think it can run down an Eluder usually end up learning a fatal lesson in space warfare. Each hit kills 2 crew members.

It might be important to note that the Eluder can run into the B.U.T.T., damaging itself, much like the Mycon Podship.

Tactical Overview
An Eluder is a coward’s ship: it is designed by a coward, built by cowards, and flown by cowards. There are only two types of Eluder Captains: the living cowards, and the brave dead. The living cowards never meet face-to-face with a foe. The Eluder must wear its enemy down little by little. A common and effective Spathi tactic is to show the enemy the Eluder's butt while firing B.U.T.T. missiles at them.

Strong Against
The Eluder is capable of wearing down the Ur-Quan Dreadnought easily. When facing (or running away from) a Kohr-Ah Marauder the Eluder can run away in a straight course, sidestepping spinning wheels and firing B.U.T.T.s, and if beyond B.U.T.T. range, make a complete circle (Turn+Acceleration) to allow the Eluder to get back in range before continuing in the former course. Slylandro Probes can be tricked into chasing the Eluder in a straight path, allowing B.U.T.T.s to be used at will. Mycon Podships have a hard time handling the Eluder, especially if you can force them to swallow their own Plasmoids. Additionally, VUX Intruders fall like flies before the Eluder, which can circle outside the Intruder's laser range and shower it with B.U.T.T.s.

Weak Against
Fast ships such as the Pkunk Fury and naturally the Chmmr Avatar whose ZapSats render the B.U.T.T.s completely useless and the pellet weapon nearly so. The Yehat Terminator provides for an interesting stalemate. The Terminator cannot catch the Eluder, and the Eluder cannot fire fast enough to breach the Terminator's shield.

Miscellaneous
Rumors
There have been rumors that a few Eluders exist that are painted all black with red stripes. Legends of the Black Spathi Squadron have been passed down for generations and tell of a small band of courageous, brave Spathi rebels who attempt to lead its brethren to freedom. However, the credibility of this legend is dubious at best because even the most courageous Spathi in the known universe are a little short of being completely terrified.

__NOTOC__

Underestimating the Orz Nemesis would likely be the last mistake anyone can ever make. Like its name suggests, this ship is a goddess of revenge, coming to inflict pain and vengeance on the galaxy. Never, under any circumstances, chase after the Nemesis!

Navigation
The Nemesis is fairly quick, has a fair turn-rate and good acceleration. Its relatively large footprint makes dodging incoming fire difficult, although not impossible.

Armament
Primary
The Nemesis is armed with a moderately powerful howitzer cannon which is remarkable in that it can be rotated to different firing positions during combat by holding the secondary weapon button while using the turning controls. The rotational turret allows usage as a strafing weapon or as a backwards utilized attacker-repellent. The energy costs of this weapon are rather large, however, and it can only fire volleys of two or three shots at a time. Each hit from the howitzer kills 3 crew members.

Secondary
Orz crew, encased in robotic, armored exo-skeleton, can exit the ship from the aft portholes and enter an enemy ship by burning a hole in its hull. These Orz Marines then start roaming the enemy ship’s corridors, killing any enemy crewmember they encounter. However, there is also a small risk that an Orz Marine itself will fall victim to the enemy crew and be killed. Especially useful in large groups, the Marines can blast a ship entirely by themselves. Any Marine aboard an enemy ship when it explodes will jet back out into space and set a return course for the Nemesis. The Marines are also very adept at using a Leyland Gravity Whip to speed them towards their target, a tactic for which they have been specially trained.

For every marine aboard an enemy ship, every half second, a random decision is made. Half of the time, an enemy crew member will be killed and the Marine survives, 7 out of 16 times, the Marine survives without inflicting any damage, and 1 out of 16 times the marine dies without doing any further damage. On average, a Marine can kill 8 crew members before dying.

Tactical Overview
A very effective ship that rarely fails, although prolonged combat against multiple opponents can take a heavy toll.

Strong against: Ur-Quan Dreadnought and to some degree Kohr-Ah Marauder are both in danger. The Chenjesu Broodhome is virtually helpless against the marines as is the VUX Intruder and the Mycon Podship. The marines bounce off the Yehat Terminator and Utwig Jugger's shields, but in the latter case, no energy is fed to their batteries by the impact, so they can be used to take down the Jugger’s shields quite easily. Showing the Chmmr Avatar your aft and blasting her with the howitzer is a tricky thing but the Nemesis can break through the tractor beam and as soon as the ZapSats are down, the Avatar is marine-meat. The Ilwrath Avenger's cloak allows it to hide from the space marines, making it immune to space marine attacks while cloaked. However, due to the Avenger's slow speed, turning, and short firing range, the Orz Nemesis can fire at various places through trial-and-error using its rotating cannon to fire from behind, damaging the Avenger bit-by-bit.

Weak against: The Pkunk Fury, Slylandro Probe and Arilou Skiff can effortlessly pull out of marine’s grasp and use hit-n-run attacks to whack the unready Nemesis. The Androsynth Guardian's Blazer form destroys marines on impact, and the bubbles provide an excellent defensive screen, and the Nemesis’s aft section appears to have been designed exactly to be wedged by a wicked blazer. So long as they manage to evade the marines, the X-form and the Spathi Eluder can pose a pain in the butt to any Nemesis captain. A very hot Shofixti Scout pilot can evade the marines long enough to use a wrap-around slingshot maneuver to catch the Nemesis unaware. The Thraddash Torch, with its Afterburner, makes short work of the Nemesis as well, being able to outrun the Marines with ease, while simultaneously roasting any that get in the way.

__NOTOC__

The Melnorme Trader is a large ship with a moderate turning rate and average speed. Mostly designed for long range travel and storage to support the Melnorme trade system, the Trader is not a ship of war. Given that, it is still quite capable of defending itself due to a recently acquired Keel-Verezy weapon system.

Navigation
As stated previously, the Trader is not a very agile craft, but neither is it ponderously slow. Combined with its various weapon systems, the Trader's maneuverability becomes more than sufficient.

Armament
Primary
The primary weapon mounted on a Trader is a chargeable, long-range blaster weapon. The Melnorme Captain can prepare the projectile without releasing it. Doing so moves the weapon through several distinct (and colorful) stages. When it is finally released the projectile travels extremely fast, and will do considerably more damage the longer it has been charging. It has a very long range, and at full power it can do as much damage as a Shofixti glory device at point-blank range. It is also able to absorb a Dreadnought's fusion blast and other projectiles when at full power (red), excluding Kohr-Ah Marauder's F.R.I.E.D.

The order of the main weapon's colors is green, blue, purple, and red. Similarly the damage is tied to the color, following the pattern of 2, 4, 8 and 16.

Secondary
The ship's secondary weapon is a confusion ray — an elecromagnetic cannon that disrupts the enemy ship's control systems.1 A stunned enemy cannot activate their secondary weapon systems or control their attitude jets, but they are able to operate their primary weapon and thrusters normally. An enemy under the effect of the elecromagnetic confusion ray will spin helplessly, and become easy prey for the Trader.
If this weapon is employed near the planet, then its effects can be quite perilous.

Tactical Overview
While charging the primary weapon, all energy generation systems are diverted into the the containment field. This means that Trader pilots should watch their fuel gauges closely, and not begin charging the weapon until they have enough energy left over for a Confusion Ray, or successive non-charged shots.

The Trader can easily destroy a Mycon Podship. If the Trader can evade the Podship long enough to charge a blast into red, then it will be able to absorb all Plasmoids that the Podship sends. Once the Podship uses up all its batteries firing Plasmoids, the Trader can approach, fire the blast, and then fire two small blasts to destroy the ship. In addition, a fully-charged shot can destroy a Druuge Mauler instantly, and the confusion ray renders the sniping tactics that Mauler pilots are forced to use impossible. In addition, the Trader is quite proficient in destroying a Utwig Jugger and a Yehat Terminator thanks to their confusion ray's ability to neutralize both ships' defensive secondary abilities.
Notes and references
1In the Star Control II PC manual (pg. 94), the secondary weapon is referred to as a "confusion ray". The 3DO ship information video refers to it as an "electromagnetic cannon".

__NOTOC__

The Earthling Cruiser is a vessel of happenstance. Humanity was brought into The Ur-Quan Slave War with almost no preparation. It was only their long history of proliferation that allowed this vessel to be so effective in the (ultimately losing) battle against the Ur-Quan Hierarchy. Unlike their decision regarding the Syreen Penetrators, the Ur-Quan destroyed the entire Cruiser fleet as well as every database for constructing the Cruisers. The notable exceptions to this destruction were the derelict Tobermoon drifting in Vela's Oort Cloud and copies of blueprint disks hidden by a former production assistant of the Detroit shipyards. It was these blueprint disks that allowed the recently formed New Alliance to manufacture Cruisers prior to the liberation of Earth.

Navigation
The Cruiser is a little below average in speed but has a respectable turn rate. This complements its weaponry well when facing off against opponents preferring a medium-encounter range, notably by either closing that range or expanding it rather quickly.

Armament
Primary
The Cruiser's primary weapon earned them quick respect in the Alliance. It's not terribly advanced, but with the number that were stored in Earth's Peace Vaults during (and before and after) Humanity's wars against itself they were a pleasant surprise to their allies and a devastating blow to their enemies. Based in part on the Peacekeeper missiles of the Cold War, the "Fire-and-forget" Nuclear Missile is a simple concept. Put the biggest explosive that a post-industrial nuclear society has on the end of vaguely competent tracking and navigation system; repeat several million times. This weapon has long range and can correct for significant variation in original trajectory and later enemy movement. Unless the weapon can be shot down (no mean task) or cunningly evaded, the power of the atom will be unleashed on the enemy crew.

Each hit from a missile kills 4 crew members. Note that the missile can damage its launcher as well.

Secondary
The Cruiser's alternate weapon is a very short range point-defense laser system, killing 1 crew member per hit, based on mid-1980s "Star Wars" missile defense technology. It fires lasers at enemy ships, projectiles, asteroids, or anything else that is close to the Earthling ship. This system is proof against daughter ships like the Ur-Quan Dreadnought Fighter and Orz Nemesis Space Marine, as well as some weaker projectiles.

Tactical Overview
The Cruiser is highly effective when used as a stand-off ship; it is capable of delivering punishing blows from great distances, and the auto-tracking aspect of its weapons makes aiming of secondary importance. The Cruiser can even defeat an Ur-Quan Dreadnought without taking a hit, as long as it can keep its distance. Its slow speed makes this easier said than done, however.

Unfortunately, the turning radius of the missiles can sometimes miss faster ships such as the Slylandro Probe, and rarely can even go off course in such a way that it can even hit the Cruiser that fired the missile by accident. Very high-speed ships like the Pkunk Fury can deliberately take advantage of this, but not so easily as against a Mycon Podship

Against the Druuge Mauler, the Cruiser can exploit the Mauler's slow speed and turning rate, making it difficult for the Mauler to dodge the auto-tracking missiles. The same tactic also works when up against a VUX Intruder.

Fsi-Dib: included weapon damage info + corrected main weapon energy consumption from 1 to 4

__NOTOC__

The Druuge Mauler is one of the single most troublesome ships in space. Its slow, ungainly reactions make it a difficult ship to pilot. Mastering the correct usage of the weapons is not easy and its slow battery regeneration turns the Mauler into a very vulnerable ship. Yet, when correctly used against certain ships, the Mauler can prove a deadly adversary.

Navigation
The Mauler is a slow, plodding ship with poor acceleration and a modest turning rate. It is strongly affected by gravity wells. However, the Mauler also has a high-recoil forward cannon that is incredibly useful for sending it flying backwards at high speeds.

Armament
Primary
The Mauler is equipped with — or more accurately, is — a large, high-recoil cannon. Immensely powerful, it can destroy some vessels in a single shot (kills 6 crew members per hit), and those lucky enough to survive the impact are knocked off-course by it. The recoil generated from firing can also propel the Mauler backwards to incredible speeds, which can be a double-edged sword. The awesome power of this weapon is held in check by its relatively high power usage, and the dynamos on Mauler ships, which can only be described as "pathetic".

Secondary
To compensate for the Mauler's weak battery recharging, Druuge captains have been known to order lower-ranking crew members to be thrown into the furnace, which feeds vast amounts of energy into the combat batteries. At first, this appears to be the single most useless weapons system available, depleting your own crew in order to power your primary weapons; but it can prove quite useful in a pinch. This is especially useful against the Chmmr Avatar where you can use the high-recoil cannon and the supply of battery power to keep out of the Avatar’s Tractor-and-Laser tactic, pummeling it to dust. Other than that, it is recommended that captains be as frugal as possible with their crew.

Tactical Overview
The Mauler is the sniper rifle of Star Control ships -- Proper aiming and conservation of fire are required to use it effectively. It has distinct advantages versus certain ships, and it can be hard to hit when it is flying at super-high speeds due to the recoil, but otherwise it is very vulnerable.

Strong against: Chmmr Avatar, as noted above. The Mauler captain must be wary, however: while the strong recoil of the cannon can carry the Mauler far from the Avatar's effective range, a canny Avatar pilot will accelerate in the opposite direction and "wrap the screen". The Mauler must be ready to reorient and fire at a moment's notice in order to change course, or momentum can carry the Mauler straight into the certain death of the Avatar's laser. Shofixti Scout - The high-recoil would allow the Mauler to stay out of the Glory Device’s range and it only needs one hit to destroy the scout. The Ilwrath Avenger will have a hard time against it too. Its projectiles will sail right through an Umgah Drone's antimatter cone, which allows you to attack them with almost complete impunity. The X-Form is hard to hit, but can't hit the Mauler either in either form - the Mauler has only to sit back and fire away, and its recoil will carry it out of range. The VUX Intruder's limpets as well are too slow to catch up with a speeding Mauler, and the Intruder is too slow to dodge the Mauler's shots.

Tenuous against: The Ur-Quan Dreadnought's fighters can peck a Mauler to death if it slows down for too long, as can the Orz Nemesis’ marines. The Chenjesu Broodhome DOGIs are particularly crippling, but again, only if allowed to catch up with the Mauler. The key is to not use the thruster (which actually slows the ship down) and to keep firing the cannon whenever the ship is forced to slow down. The Earthling Cruiser's missiles will wipe out a Mauler easily if it ever slows down, but their guidance system makes them all but useless when the Mauler is moving at extreme speeds. For all these ships, half the danger is the chance of running into an unexpected planet, rather than the actual enemy ship.

Weak Against: The Mycon Podship won't let a Mauler get a good shot at it without heavy losses, and even once a shot lands, the Mauler has to continue shooting or the Podship will just regenerate all its crew. The Kohr-Ah Marauder’s spinning blades are very dangerous for a Mauler flying wildly out of control, and will easily catch the ship if it slows down. The Arilou Skiff can be killed in one hit but is nigh-impossible to hit; the Slylandro Probe and Pkunk Fury are nigh-impossible to hit AND must be hit multiple times in order to defeat them. The Utwig Jugger's shields are impossible for the Mauler to bypass, such that it considers the Mauler a "portable refueling platform".

__NOTOC__

The Chmmr Avatar is a state of the art ship with few real foes, combining the technological prowess of the Mmrnmhrm and the Chenjesu. With medium speed and a fairly good turn-rate the Avatar shouldn't be taken lightly. Its main weapon is a strong and deadly laser and its tractor beam would make even the bravest enemy captain sweat. It is orbited by three Zap satellites (ZapSats) for point defense.

Navigation
Built specifically for the purpose of defeating Ur-Quan vessels, the Avatar is faster and has a better turn rate than both the Dreadnought and Marauder. It is, however, quite large, and appropriate care should be taken near gravity wells.

Armament
Primary
Chmmr designers bring in the most devastating laser in the galaxy, so powerful that it ionizes the solar wind, causing visible sparkles in the void. Capable of tearing anything to pieces in a few seconds, this laser turns a face-to-face battle with the Avatar into a suicide run. Some sources describe this primary weapon as a "heavy X-ray laser."1 Unlike other lasers, Avatar's laser kills 2 crew members per hit.

Secondary
The Avatar is also outfitted with a powerful Tractor Beam, capable of tractoring ships towards the Avatar's laser-jaws by generating a field of artificial gravity. Only fast-and-heavy ships can hope to evade this awesome beam. Slow ships or fast but light weighted ships (such as the Shofixti Scout and especially the Yehat Terminator) cannot evade this powerful tractoring. Lightweight ships can actually be thrown into immense speeds. It is quite funny to see a Terminator flying around in speeds three and four times higher than those of a Slylandro Probe. The Arilou Skiff or Slylandro Probe, being unaffected by gravity, are not affected by the Tractor beam.

Additional
In addition to its already formidable arsenal, three AI-Controlled laser-turrets orbit around the Avatar, providing it with point-defense against most types of attacks. Each ZapSat has 10 hit-points, and when all three are functional, the Avatar is nearly immune to weapons with 3 or less hit-points.

Tactical Overview
Don't mess with an Avatar. There are clearly few ships that can actually match it.

Strengths
So long as its ZapSats remain in place, the Avatar will have little trouble defeating most ships. Several ships do not have any weaponry that will penetrate the ZapSats.

Difficult Matchups
*The Shofixti Scout's glory device will usually destroy at least two ZapSats, leaving the Avatar much more vulnerable for the next fight. Proper timing of the detonation before the Scout is destroyed by the Avatar's laser or ZapSats, can be tricky, however.
*The Androsynth Guardian in comet form proves very nasty against the Avatar, if lucky enough — there's roughly a 25% chance per attack run for the Guardian to get stuck between the Avatar's nose and wings. However, the outcome may often be mutual annihilation, since the ZapSats will continually damage the Guardian. A good defense for the Avatar is to face in the opposite direction, since this will render it nearly impossible for the Guardian to successfully wedge.
**Another tactic for the Guardian is to launch small groups of bubbles and comet away to safety. This is slower than ramming with the comet, but much safer, though many players despise the tactic, considering it unfair (since the Avatar is not really forced to speed through the bubbles). Still, the Guardian's modest energy regeneration often means that this tactic is only delaying the inevitable.
*A Supox Blade using its secondary to stay out of the Avatar's range can defeat it, if lucky enough not to be hit by asteroids. However, if the Avatar uses a gravity whip, the match will prove effectively impossible for the Blade.
*The Thraddash Torch's Mark VI Blaster is not blocked by the ZapSats' lasers; in addition, an AI-controlled Avatar will pass through the Torch's Afterburner, receiving significant damage. As a lightweight ship, however, the Torch is vulnerable to the tractor beam, so its pilot must remain wary and alert.
*A Yehat Terminator, if hurled into "hyperspacing speed" can rain fire on the Avatar but this is also not an easy thing to do.
*An Orz Nemesis can evade the tractor beam while patiently firing at the ZapSats with its turret facing backwards.
*The Druuge Mauler can recoil out of laser range while pummeling the Avatar with its cannon. The Mauler has to be careful not to recoil too fast, lest he won't be able to change course and will be smashed by the X-ray laser in seconds. Throwing a few crew in the furnace for extra speed to evade the Tractor Beam is inevitable.
*The Utwig Jugger can use its shields to defend against ZapSats while firing at the Avatar when out of range, quickly draining the Avatar — unless the ZapSats happen to die first; the AI is able, with a Jugger, to quickly let down the shield and fire, its vulnerability window being too small to be dangerous. However, this is much harder to do for a human player, and in netplay with any lag, even impossible.

All of these ships are capable of defeating the Avatar, but will be destroyed if their captain makes a single mistake.

Few ships can truly fight the Avatar with impunity.

Interesting Matchups
*The Kohr-Ah Marauder's F.R.I.E.D rips the ZapSats into pieces. Its shuriken mines are also a force to be reckoned with, since each takes 8 shots to destroy(while being fired) — less if stationary. All in all, the Marauder has the best chance of any race at destroying the Avatar with minimal losses.
*While the Kzer-Za Dreadnought's fighters are pointless versus the ZapSats, the Dreadnought has a better range and its fusion blasts can tear down the Avatar extremely quickly. An AI Dreadnought will not even launch any fighters if the Avatar has at least one ZapSat remaining.
*The Chenjesu Broodhome, with its range, can prove a worthy adversary as well.
The Chmmr has significantly more firepower than these ships, however, and once the tractor beam pulls them into range of the laser they will quickly be destroyed, but usually leaving the Avatar without ZapSats for its next fight.

__NOTOC__

The Chenjesu Broodhome, like its builders, is made almost entirely of crystal. As its name implies it is notably large and somewhat cumbersome, but in a head-on battle it is unlikely to go down without inflicting serious damage to the enemy.

Navigation
To a sessile and silicon-based race, perhaps the Broodhome seems quick and agile. Most other advanced races tend to disagree. The Broodhome is slow. Slow to move and slow to turn. It can even be difficult for an inexperienced Captain to escape a planet's gravity well. More advanced warriors know to keep their distance from their enemy and plan a careful course near the planet.

Armament
Primary
The Broodhome's main weapon is a Photon Crystal Shard, a simple crystalline life form, with a huge range, possibly reaching as much as a tenth of a planetary system's diameter.1 Any Captain foolish enough to be struck by the weapon deserves the vacuous grave that he is soon to find himself in. The projectile however, like the ship itself, is somewhat slow. By the time it reaches the target, it is very likely that the target has moved. This is when the crystal shard's true ingenuity comes into play. Even a near miss can be turned into a serious blow because the crystal explodes at the Captain's command, damaging anything that has yet to escape its ponderous onslaught. A direct hit from the crystal kills 6 crew members, and the shrapnels each kill 2.

Secondary
The Chenjesu also employ DOGI (Deenergizing Offensive Guided Interceptor) attack drones. These autonomous and slow-moving drones are of sufficient mass to affect an enemy ship's trajectory when they collide with it, a feat which they excel at performing. In addition to this slight change of course, which often upsets the affected Captain's careful aim at the distant Broodhome, he will find his energy reserves being drained away and often times depleted. Luckily for him the DOGIs have a limited lifespan, although their mothership has an endless supply (at least in-game). Though the DOGIs are essentially autonomous, the Broodhome is equipped with four high-frequency resonators (blue protrusions on the forward hull) that can be used to control the drones.

Tactical Overview
Keep your distance. The Broodhome is not a close range fighter. If your enemy approaches, fire off a quick stream of Crystal Shards and detonate them at zero range as it is likely that he will out maneuver any attempt at a direct hit. The more bits of glass and rock that you can put in space, the better. As soon as you get a second to collect yourself, drop a DOGI and hope it distracts him while you accelerate away.

One of the more evil tactics possible is to launch DOGIs against a Druuge Mauler, then sit back and laugh as a hapless computer pilot throws its crew away in a desperate attempt to retain battery power. Similarly, the Utwig Jugger is vulnerable to DOGI interference; in this case, however, the Jugger can continue to fire - and with its better weaponry, will likely shoot the DOGIs down before they can do their work. The unfortunate part is that one touch from a DOGI completely neutralizes the Jugger's shields.

Notes and references
1The Chmmr say that the Sa-Matra incinerated their Broodhomes from ten times the weapon range of their ships; they also say that the Sa-Matra was able to vaporize ships from the far end of a system.

Inertia has always been an impediment to maneuverability — and to the passengers' comfort. With most ships, if you have reached a certain speed, you have to pray that you will not suddenly stumble upon a superior enemy force, with no hope of braking and fleeing in time. It is not the case for the inertialess Arilou Lalee'lay Skiff — commonly known among the Humans as "flying saucers" —, capable of an immediate full stop and impervious to the effects of gravity. Piloted by the mischievous Arilou, the light blue Skiff is designed mainly for exploratory missions and boasts minimal offensive weaponry, but it has one envious quality: instant short range teleportation.

Navigation
When not engaging in a HyperSpace Shunt, the Skiff flies, or rather glides, through TrueSpace at extremely fast speeds (though not as quickly as the nimble Spathi Eluder or Pkunk Fury). Its inertialess drive gives it the smallest turning radius in the galaxy — zero! — and of course the turning rate itself can't be beat. No inertia also means instant acceleration (and deceleration), as well as no gravitational effects from planetary objects or anything else for that matter!

Armament
Primary
The Skiff's main and only true weapon is a ventral 360-degree short range auto-aiming laser. Damage is minimal (1 per hit) and technique and timing are crucial. However, a major drawback of the targeting system is that it only tracks the enemy ship and cannot be locked on another target.

Particular skillful captains are able to minimize the shortcomings of the limited weaponry with carefully-timed firing and dodging and cunning tactics.

Secondary
The special ability of the Skiff is a short-range HyperSpace shunt transportation device allowing instantaneous teleportation. While extremely useful in making a quick exit from a heated sortie, the destination cannot be picked, and because of this undesirable results can occur, even materializing inside of a planetary object or another ship, which can prove to be fatal. However, such catastrophic occurrences are extremely rare.

Tactical Overview
Due to the difficulty in winning a dogfight through brute force, Arilou captains have been forced to devise more clever methods of vanquishing foes. The following are three of the most commonly used tactics:
*Gun and run
*:Agility and speed are the two strongest attributes of the Skiff. Why not exploit them? Heading directly into enemy fire can be effective if the opponent's barrage is slow enough and the Skiff's captain is nimble enough. Once close enough to the enemy ship, even the directionally-challenged auto-aiming laser can do its job without missing. Leave enough fuel for a quick jump, and the Skiff is out of harm's way before the enemy can bring its weapons to bear.
*Planetary ambush
*:With no inertia, the Skiff is the only vehicle entirely immune to gravitational effects from nearby planets even when it is situated right next to it. Letting the bloodlust overcome an adversary's judgment, the perceptive Arilou captain can capitalize on such foolhardiness. Sitting on the far side of the planet as the enemy ship approaches, the opponent cannot simultaneously aim accurately and guide his ship to safe course (with some exceptions such as the Supox). Seizing such opportunities nets maximal damage to the opponent as he slingshots past the ambushing Skiff without ever having the ability to return accurate fire.
*Cyborg shimmy
*:With the infinite dexterity of a computer, an expert Skiff captain can sometimes approach an enemy vessel in a direction that it can't fire. This feint requires split-second timing at the helm that no human could possibly match. It's even more devastating for the ship captain who can't quite catch his Arilou opponent off-guard.

It is also worth noting that the Skiff is just about the worst match-up a Mycon Podship can expect. Skilled captains can easily steer the Mycon Plasmoids into the Podship itself, causing it considerable damage with each Plasmoid.

When the Androsynth departed Earth en masse in 2085 during the Clone Revolt, no Human had ever imagined that one could take to the stars at faster-than-light speed. Clever, cunning, and imaginative, the Androsynth outwitted their human creators at every turn by keeping low-key until an opportunity presented itself. In retrospect, it should have been no surprise that the pride of their space fleet, the dumpy little blue pod known as the Guardian (or sometimes as the Blazer), would hide something a bit more sinister inside its modest packaging, the sight of one quickly becoming the ultimate fear of all mankind. Near the the end of the Ur-Quan Slave War, the Androsynth Hit-and-Run squadrons along the Coreward Front occasionally used modified Guardians capable of extended Blazer modes, giving them greater speed, range, and destructive power.

The Androsynth, obsessed with aesthetics, did not hesitate to give to the Guardian ships a form as beautiful as possible; these ships are basically a tube of platinum metal alloys, multiple pieces of blue glass coiling around it, their sizes increasing as one approaches the back of the ship.1

The Guardian's victory tune is the song 'Mongoloid' by the band Devo. A Guardian's crew also resembles the band.

Navigation
In its normal configuration, the Guardian is far from the fastest ship around, but it can still outrun an Intruder. With a turning rate slightly below average and its acceleration only slightly above, it may seem less than impressive.

However, in Blazer form, all this changes. Always at full speed — which is faster than almost any other ship — and turning on the edge of a dime, it makes for a highly effective killer. The catch is that this newly gained strength only stays for as long as the batteries are charged, and they will be rapidly being drained. As you cannot turn off the Blazer mode as long as there is energy left, this will leave the Guardian very vulnerable for a moment.

Armament
Primary
The Guardian's main weaponry is a molecular acid sphere launcher. The spheres use a so-called "Chaos™ tracking", as the Star Control 1 DataBank entry names it — this "tracking" consists of random oscillatory moves that slowly direct the sphere towards the enemy. They don't damage each other or the Guardian that launched them, but they damage enemy spheres and Guardians.

Each bubble that hits an enemy ship kills 2 crew.

Secondary
There is one of two ways to defeat an enemy in a head-on battle: be stronger or be faster. The Androsynth decided both options were best when they developed Blazer technology, and did they succeed! One tug of a rope and the Guardian sheds its crusty blue cocoon and morphs into a beautiful blazing deadly comet, which just about vaporizes anything it touches! The only drawback is that once the Blazer form has been initiated, it burns up all available fuel until there is none left. And once it does that, it reverts to normal form and comes to a dead stop like it was a space-anchor.

Each bump to an enemy ship kills 3 crew.

Tactical Overview
While the Guardian's main weapon may be useful to keep an enemy at bay for a moment, its real strength lies in its Blazer form. Once activated, go straight for the enemy's ship and quickly bash it to bits. Be careful though as the enemy's weapons can still cause damage. The Thraddash Torch is the Blazer form's worst nightmare — all a reasonably competent Thraddash captain has to do is deploy trails from the Afterburner. Even though the Blazer's incredible turning ability will let it avoid the trails if the Guardian's commander has the piloting ability, it is unlikely that the Guardian will be able to get around the flame trails without either running out of battery power or seriously damaging itself in a mad charge through the fires.

If you can't finish off the enemy in one run, save some of your battery power to escape to a safe range, as you'll be vulnerable when the Blazer form runs out.
Notes and references
1Size affects the sprite used to represent the planet in interplanetary mode and the number of satellites. Small worlds are either moons or planets without any moons. Large worlds have a 193/256 chance of having no moons, a 51/256 chance of having a single moon, and a 12/256 chance of having two moons. Gas Giants have a 27/256 chance of having no moons, a 38/256 chance of having a single moon, a 64/256 chance of having two moons, a 64/256 chance of having three moons, and a 63/256 chance of having four moons. Whether the planet is Topo or Cratered affects the way its surface map is generated.
