Superdude: /* Random Teams */

Preface
The Ur-Quan Masters provides a networked Super Melee arena and point costs for all the ships, but no standardized rules. Thus, different groups of fans have developed different rule sets for putting together their fleets for battle. This page is an attempt to collect all such rule sets and describe them. If you've played using rules that aren't described here, by all means add them!

Standard Rules for #uqm-arena
Players may use only one ship of each type and build up to a maximum fleet size of 200 points. The Thraddash Torch is banned. No game modifications are used.

*In a serious game or tournament you are expected to build your team before connecting so that you can't base your ship choices on knowledge of your opponent's team.

*Point limits other than 200 can be used, although they are uncommon. The outcome of a lower point game is drastically affected by each player's fleet composition, while higher point games don't leave much room for choice in fleet selection.

*The Thraddash Torch is banned because the ship has the potential to stall matches and upset game balance if played to its limit.

*Stalemates are resolved by forcing the faster of the two ships in play to go on the offensive.

*Game modifications have become quite prevalent recently, making the standard rule set less ubiquitous.

Fleet Setup Rules
No Duplicate Ships
No more than one of each ship type can appear in a player's fleet. This forces ship variety and prevents a player's fleet setup from having too much impact on the outcome of the melee match.

Duplicate Ships
The game can also be played simply with a point limit and no restriction on duplicate ships; this has fallen out of use since the result depends mostly on the teams used. Certain ship types tend to dominate most others. However, this ruleset has seen revival recently in games played with Shiver's Balance Mod, which handles duplicates better than vanilla UQM.

*In order to reasonably allow more of the same ship, players can take turns picking ships rather than connecting to each other with predetermined fleets.

*30pt ships can be limited or banned, to keep them from skewing the game heavily.

Crap Fleets
In order for some of the less commonly used ships to see use, some players like to play with each player designing the other player's fleet. The fleet point limit should be considered a minimum rather than a maximum. This can be played with various point totals or allowances for duplicate ships, although duplicates can lead to undesirable results such as a fleet full of Drones.

Random Teams
A random team can be more interesting, as you will often end up without such omnipresent mainstays as the Utwig Jugger. A good random team generator can be found here.

Auction
Players get a pool of points and ships are auctioned off to the highest bidder. The details of auction procedure are up to the players. Ideally, a separate person outside of the game should act as auctioneer. This format is best used with 4 or 6 players playing a tournament with their auction-bought ships and multiple copies of every ship type up for auction.

Fixed Number of Ships
Disregard point values and limit fleets by quantity. A "No Duplicates" rule is strongly recommended in conjunction with this. This places an emphasis on large, expensive craft or the opposite when combined with "Crap Fleets".

Alliance vs. Hierarchy
A match with the predetermined teams "Old Alliance Ships" against "Old Hierarchy Ships". It's an interesting match, since the creators of the game went to a great deal of effort to balance it in Star Control I. Unfortunately, it seems to favor the Alliance.

Other Rules
Random Ship Selection
Use the random select button whenever the game prompts you to choose which ship to send into the arena. Ideally, both players should immediately mash this button any time the ship selection screen comes up to remove any doubt of cheating. This format is not great for fair competition, but the unusual ship match-ups add a lot of variety to the game. Random Ship Selection is best combined with a ban on 30pt ships, which tend to heavily skew a match depending on what is drawn against them.

Battle victor chooses ship for loser
Requires communication between players when ships are selected. When playing by the usual rules, the player who has just lost a ship picks a ship to easily defeat the other player's current ship. However, under these rules, the player with the victorious ship makes this choice for the player who has just lost a ship.
<!-- damn unfortunately my command of English is ... Zer: not sure what these meant: This makes game much more needle. In case of Scout making successful hit, -->

Left-to-Right
* Deploy ships in the order they are on your fleet list, starting from the upper-left ship slot and proceeding right.

Handicaps
* Disable one of the turning keys.

* Play with a controller that makes the game more difficult, such as a joystick or dance pad.

* Play with only one hand.

* Play drunk.

* Play high.

* Play drunk and high.

In both Star Control and Star Control II/Ur-Quan Masters, each ship has a certain intrinsic value within the context of the game. The value at the Earth Starbase is the amount of RUs gained by scrapping the ship, and also the cost to build the ship, assuming an alliance exists with that race. This value is also a hundred times greater than the point value in Super Melee and eight times greater than the debris scavenged. The two exceptions to this rule are the Slylandro Probe, which is 17 points in Super Melee, but yields 550 RU in scavenged debris, and the Melnorme Trader, which is 18 points in Super Melee, but yields 450 RU in scavenged debris.

__NOTOC__

The Earthling Cruiser is a vessel of happenstance. Humanity was brought into the Ur-Quan Slave War with almost no preparation. It was only their long history of proliferation that allowed this vessel to be so effective in the battle against the Ur-Quan Hierarchy. A massive industrial base located at Detroit, Michigan, USA churned out vast numbers of Cruisers which for a time acted as the backbone of the Allied fleet.1 Upon Earth's defeat, the Ur-Quan destroyed all remaining Cruisers and every database used for their construction. A former production assistant of the Detroit shipyards, who later would serve as a maintenance engineer on the Earth Starbase, managed to stash away a few copies of the Cruiser's complete blueprint and keep them hidden during Humanity's enslavement. It was these blueprint disks that allowed the fledgling New Alliance to manufacture Cruisers prior to the liberation of Earth.

Propulsion
The Cruiser's acceleration and top speed leave much to be desired, however, the ship turns very quickly.

Armament
Primary
The Cruiser's primary weapon earned humanity quick respect during the War. These long range "fire-and-forget" nuclear missiles were based on the Peacekeeper missiles of the Cold War. While these weapons are quite primitive by Ur-Quan standards, the number that were stored in Earth's Peace Vaults after Humanity's various wars nevertheless came as a pleasant surprise to the Alliance. Nuclear missiles can travel over a very long distance and correct their trajectory to follow enemy movement. Unless the weapon can be shot down or cunningly evaded, the power of the atom will be unleashed on the enemy ship. Each missile strike inflicts four damage.

Secondary
The Cruiser's alternate weapon is a short range point-defense laser system that is based on mid-1980s SDI "Star Wars" missile defense technology. It fires a laser at each enemy ship, projectile, asteroid, or other object within close proximity to the Earthling ship. Each laser hits for a single point of damage. The point-defense laser suffers from a long firing delay, making it a poor choice for short range combat. It is a situational utility weapon more than anything else. Each laser deals one damage

Tactical Overview
* The Cruiser was made to fight at long range. It is a slow ship, but in most circumstances the limited mobility which it does possess should be used to maintain distance for as long as possible. The Leyland Gravity Whip can often be of tremendous help when stalling for time. The Cruiser's rapid turn rate allows it to Pillbox effectively. Pillboxing is most beneficial against high mobility, low firepower adversaries. It is otherwise better to be on the run if the opponent does not meet that description.

* A nuclear missile can potentially whirl back around and hit the Cruiser that launched it while seeking a hostile craft. Incoming friendly fire is fortunately quite rare and can be prevented by the point-defense laser. Aside from that, missiles do not require much aim or forethought to use effectively.

* The point-defense laser's most common purpose is to shoot down asteroids in the Cruiser's flight path. Because the Cruiser has such terrible acceleration, it usually cannot afford to be knocked off course by one of these. The laser is also effective at wiping out subsidiary enemy craft and can provide a limited degree of protection against smaller projectiles.

Minutiae
* If the point-defense laser and nuclear missile launcher are activated at the same time, a missile will launch without being shot at by the laser. However, the Cruiser's energy banks will drain as if both weapons had been used. The laser will shoot down outgoing missiles if activated immediately after a missile has launched.
* The point-defense laser will always consume four energy regardless of how many targets it fires upon.

Known Ships
*Miwok
*SpaceDuster
*Tobermoon
*Zybernaut

:This article is about the Precursor race. For information on the remixing project, see Precursors Remixing Team.

The Precursors (also referred to as the Shaggy Ones by the Slylandro) were an ancient, highly advanced species and the earliest known race to extensively explore the known universe. Unfortunately, the actual name of the race has been lost in antiquity. The Precursors moved quickly to become masters of the galaxy, leaving evidence of their presence virtually everywhere. The height of Precursor culture seems to have been approximately 250,000 Earth years ago.1 Despite their widespread presence, it appears that the Precursors vanished from the galactic scene quite suddenly, leaving no indication as to why. From the recovered Precursor artifacts, it has been determined that as a species they were a race of "shaggy giants," likely 5-8 meters tall and twice as wide, and seemingly not bipedal. Commander Hayes suggests that they may have looked similar to brontosaurs or elephants, and the Star Control II manual states, referring to The Flagship, that "Levers were almost impossible to move, three people were required to actuate a single switch, and the chairs, beds and other furnishings were better suited for a wooly mammoth than a human."2

The only species that has been confirmed to have first-hand contact is the Slylandro. However, due to the lack of writing implements, much of their knowledge of the Precursors has been lost over the passing time. The Slylandro do mention that prior to the mysterious exodus, the Precursors were frantically searching for something and were obviously worried over the situation. Their last transmission seemed to indicate that the Precursors had found the answer they were searching for, and that the arrangement of Rainbow Worlds would give a hint as to where they went &mdash; the Galactic Core.

The Spathi, however, believe that the Precursors are not really gone, but that "they simply came to their senses one day and used their superior technology to invent some kind of perfect invisibility shield and remain alive and happy to this day". Obviously, the Spathi hope to rediscover this secret someday and disappear into similar obscurity.

While the species itself appears to be long gone, evidence of their existence still remains. Various artifacts of Precursor origin have been discovered on any number of worlds. The largest artifacts known to date are the Sa-Matra battle platform discovered by the Ur-Quan, the Precursor factory discovered underneath the surface of Vela I (Unzervalt), and the 10 Rainbow Worlds found throughout this region of space.

Notes and references
1Several dates have been given for the Precursors' place in galactic history. The Star Control manual (pg. 37) places them approximately 300,000 years ago. The Star Control II PC manual (pg. 49) states that The Flagship was designed 250,000 years ago. Commander Hayes says that they suddenly appeared about 200,000 years ago, disappearing after 3,000 years in less than a decade. The Slylandro had interactions with them about 41-39 Drahn ago (about 250,000-265,000 Earth years ago).
The Amplified Precursor Bomb is module that can only be installed by the Chmmr after they have been freed from their slave shield, and after The Captain has obtained the Utwig Bomb. While the Utwig Bomb itself is quite destructive, unmodified it is insufficient to destroy the Sa-Matra. Therefore, the Chmmr amplify the bomb's destructive power with fragile crystal power boosters, directing The Flagship's own weapon power into the explosive device. Unfortunately the modification is permanent, and the crystal amplifiers and bomb occupy the ten rear module slots of The Flagship. Additionally, The Flagship's emergency Warp Escape Unit has to be removed to accommodate the amplified bomb. With help from the Chmmr technicians, the whole installation of the amplified bomb takes only two weeks.

The Amplified Precursor Bomb is necessary to destroy the Sa-Matra.

The multi-colored Spathi Eluder, formerly known as the Discriminator, remains the bulk of the Spathi fleet even 20 years after the War. Its construction, though seemingly chaotic, is carefully designed to mimic its crew's natural attributes: paranoia, elusiveness, and cowardice. From the outside, the Eluder consists of many bubble-shaped, solid-colored cabins joined together by smaller gray corridors. The intention of having so many large seemingly crew-filled projections is partly to obfuscate enemy into targeting the decoy cabins and to direct enemy fire away from the sections where the crew resides. However, in-game, enemy weapons incapacitate the same amount of crew no matter where the Eluder is damaged.

Propulsion
The Eluder is one of the fastest ships in our region of space. The rapid acceleration and turning rate of this ship led Human servicemen to nickname it the "space jitterbug" during the Ur-Quan Slave War.1 It is capable of an impressive maximum speed as well. The Eluder's powerful propulsion system is not intended for speeding into battle, but rather for speeding away from it. From this perspective, the Eluder performs admirably.

Armament
Primary
The Eluder's primary weapon consists of a repeating forward mounted gun2 which can fire off low impact projectiles over a short distance. This gun is widely considered to be inferior to the Eluder's other armament, but it does have advantages over it: The projectiles fire in rapid succession and travel at a high velocity, allowing them to hit targets the Spathi's secondary weapon might be ill-suited against. Each projectile inflicts one damage upon contact.

Secondary
The secondary weapon epitomizes the Spathi approach to war. The Backwards Utilizing Tracking Torpedo (B.U.T.T.) is a medium range, low impact homing missile with moderate speed and maneuverability. Fired from the rear of the craft, B.U.T.T. missiles are the favored weapon of the Spathi military due to their effectiveness during evasion and retreat. Each missile inflicts two damage upon contact.

As with the Mycon Podship's plasmoid, this weapon can damage the Eluder if fired while the ship's aft is pointed directly away from the enemy ship. B.U.T.T. missiles can also occasionally strike and neutralize each other.

Tactical Overview
* The Eluder has fantastic durability and speed, but lacks in firepower. In addition to the ship's low impact weaponry, the Eluder's energy banks are small and slow to recover. These vessels are not at all suited for frontal assault due to these deficiencies. The defensive nature of this ship often leads to protracted engagements.

* This ship is at its best when it is running away from a pursuing enemy while lobbing torpedoes backward. Spathi torpedoes have a lower velocity and higher duration than the average projectile, making them more heavily influenced by the Relativity Effect. In practical terms this means that torpedoes are especially useful against pursuing enemies, while typically unable to reach retreating enemies. The tracking system on these torpedoes is not perfect, but tremendous mobility is required to outmaneuver them.

* Some adversaries will not pursue a Spathi Eluder at all. If their weapon range is longer, they won't need to. A tactic that often works well against slow enemies that will not pursue is to race ahead of the enemy ship and drop B.U.T.Ts in their flight path before they can veer away. Evasive enemies with high acceleration and turning speed are difficult to overtake, in which case the forward gun often works better.

* Against a computer-controlled Probe the Spathi Eluder is the ultimate bane. It it most effective in taking down probes during the singleplayer campaign. If the player maintains distance they can bombard the Probe with B.U.T.T. missiles until it is destroyed.

Minutiae
* The rumored Black Spathi Squadron Eluders are painted black with red stripes rather than the usual gaudy color scheme.

* B.U.T.T. missiles can occasionally collide and neutralize each other.

* If the B.U.T.T. has no target it may occasionally hit its own ship. This will only happen if the missile is launched in the same direction the Eluder is moving.

Minutiae
* The rumored Black Spathi Squadron Eluders are painted black with red stripes rather than the usual gaudy color scheme.

* B.U.T.T. missiles can occasionally collide and neutralize each other.

* If the B.U.T.T. has no target it may occasionally hit it's own ship. This will only happen if the missile is launched in the same direction the Eluder is flying, therefore the ship having to be backwards

The Scout is a small, speedy ship, whose outwardly weak appearance masks a weapon of great and devastating power.

This ship is the workhorse of the Shofixti, though designed with Yehat technologies. It possess a fearsome explosive weapon, the Glory Device, a kamikaze charge with a wide and powerful explosion blast.

Propulsion
The Scout is a small, fast, and maneuverable ship with excellent acceleration. Gravity wells do not affect it much, but collisions with asteroids can knock it wildly off-course. It is especially susceptible to the Chmmr Avatar's tractor beam, though using such a device on a Scout is comparable to pulling a time bomb towards your chest.

Armament
Primary
The Scout is equipped with the Mendōkusai Energy Dart, a weak, forward-firing projectile with a short-to-medium range and a fast firing rate. This is held in check by the puny combat batteries aboard the vessel. Each projectile inflicts 1 damage to enemy ships.

Mendōkusai, rather appropriately, translates to 'annoying' in Japanese.

Secondary
When faced with defeat, a Scout vessel can use its ultimate weapon, the Glory device: a powerful bomb capable of inflicting massive damage to an enemy vessel at close range. Unfortunately, detonating the Glory device is fatal to everyone aboard the Scout vessel when the device is activated. To prevent accidental activation, the secondary weapon must be pressed three times. A series of switches is visible in the melee screen so that pilots may see if the bomb is ready to detonate or not.

Tactical Overview
The Glory Device is effective against the Chmmr Avatar because it can destroy two, or sometimes even three ZapSats if activated at short range. The shields installed on Utwig Juggers and Yehat Terminators are also incapable of blocking Glory Device damage, making these ships vulnerable as well. Additionally, the following ships have small enough crew complements that they can be killed outright with the Glory Device:
*Arilou Lalee'lay Skiff
*Druuge Mauler
*Orz Nemesis
*Pkunk Fury
*Thraddash Torch
*Umgah Drone
*Zoq-Fot-Pik Stinger
*Slylandro Probe
*Another Shofixti Scout

Against most other ships, the Scout is weak, but proper use of the Energy Dart and Glory Device can sap the strength of the enemy ship so that others may have an easier time destroying it. Damaged ships can also be finished off with a well-timed Glory Device detonation. Strategically, this means that the cheaper Scout can sacrifice itself to take down much more powerful ships. Slow, battle-damaged ships are particularly vulnerable to this tactic because they cannot escape a Scout that wishes to activate the Glory device.

Some AI-controlled ships, such as the VUX Intruder, Umgah Drone, Ur-Quan Dreadnought, and Ilwrath Avenger, are vulnerable to various AI exploits involving use of the Mendōkusai Energy Dart. Generally, one either circles the enemy ship, firing darts, or in the case of Ur-Quan, shoots down fighters until the mothership is vulnerable to an attack run with the Glory Device.

If the enemy ship is destroyed by the Glory Device the Shofixti anthem will be played as if victory was assigned to the fallen hero. Importantly the player who controlled the Scout will chose his next ship after the player who controlled the ship destroyed by the Glory Device and knowing the choice of the enemy which (provided the selection is not random) may give him advantage in the following fight.

The Pkunk Fury is a colorful, flowery war ship which relies on superior mobility to outmaneuver and pick apart its enemies. It is also a wildcard, able to literally defy death at unpredictable intervals. While lightly armored and slow to recover its energy banks, the Fury can be very deadly with a skilled pilot at the helm and luck on its side.

Propulsion
The Fury is among the fastest known spacecraft to travel the stars. The ship's maximum speed is almost totally unmatched -- it takes special subsystems designed for a temporary speed boost or a planetary slingshot maneuver to go beyond that. The Fury's rate of acceleration is exceeded only by the Slylandro Probe and Arilou Skiff as well as certain subsystems on a few other ships. The Fury also boasts the fastest possible turning rate, equal to that of the Probe and Skiff.

Armament
Primary
The primary weapon is a triple-mounted minigun that fires forward and to each side simultaneously. Each of these miniguns can pump out super-heated metal pellets at an incredible rate, though over a very limited range. The pellets are rather large, so they are sometimes good for shooting down incoming ordnance. Each pellet deals 1 damage upon contact with the enemy ship.

Secondary
The Pkunk are peaceful beings which normally cannot bring themselves to kill unless they throw themselves into an emotional frenzy by continuously broadcasting insults at their enemies. Additionally, the psychic emanations produced by the Fury captain's frenzy will recharge the ship's energy stores in small increments.1

Additional
If destroyed, there is a 50% chance the Fury will be reincarnated immediately and returned to battle &mdash; fully crewed, with maximum energy. This is due to the Pkunk's divine heritage, or so the Pkunk claim.2 Due to the random nature of Fury reincarnation, a lucky Pkunk can be reborn many times.

Tactical Overview
* Being a fragile ship, the Fury does not usually hold up well in a head-to-head weapons exchange. However, certain ships with low firepower are susceptible to the Fury's high burst damage. Minigun pellets are decent at shooting down small enemy projectiles, allowing some head-to-head exchanges to end in the Fury's favor. The Fury will otherwise need to do a lot of dodging and weaving if it does not have the upper hand in terms of weaponry. Broadside attacks using either of the side guns as the Fury flies past its target are usually the best way to go about this.

* While the Fury is capable of inflicting high burst damage, it suffers from a long downtime due to painfully slow energy regeneration. Additionally, it only takes half a second to run the ship's battery from full to empty. For these reasons the Fury is very much a "hit and run" attacker. The "Special" key is best held down for the entire duration of combat to maximize energy recovery.

* There is a common firing pattern used by many Fury pilots known as the "Death Blossom". This technique is performed by holding down the fire button and either turn button while leaving the thrusters off. In addition to being visually impressive, the Death Blossom is good for laying down fire in every direction. This is useful when shooting at an agile or unpredictable enemy. However, higher damage output can be achieved in most circumstances by aiming manually during an attack run.

* The Fury is the best ship in the game to use against the Sa-Matra due to its extreme speed. The Fury is fast enough to avoid the Sa-Matra's passive defenses which will quickly dispatch most other assailants. The multidirectional firing pattern of the Fury's guns allows the ship to unleash broadside attacks as it performs strafing runs on the Sa-Matra's shield generators. Combined with the Pkunk's miraculous reincarnation ability, a single Pkunk Fury can potentially knock out all of the Sa-Matra's shield generators alone.
</table>
The Ur-Quan Kzer-Za Dreadnought is the mainstay of the Hierarchy fleet. A fully-crewed Dreadnought can crush most other spacecraft with ease. The Dreadnought also doubles as a planetary siege unit; the ship is capable of punching through stationary fortifications, destroying large structures on and beneath a planet's surface, and subduing alien worlds without support. Only the Kohr-Ah Marauder, Chmmr Avatar and The Flagship match the Dreadnought in sheer size. The massive structure of the Dreadnought is reinforced with special Eterna-tech metal seen in other examples of Ur-Quan technology.1 Should a Dreadnought be disabled, the ship will self-destruct to prevent other species from reverse-engineering Ur-Quan technology. Most sources indicate that Ur-Quan Dreadnoughts have only a single Ur-Quan on board because of their intense intraspecies territoriality. All other crew members are believed to be battle thralls forced to work on board the Dreadnought.2 Due to the unique Ur-Quan physiology, the ceilings of a Dreadnought's interior are covered with roped webbing which allow an Ur-Quan captain to loom over its controls and slaves while clinging to the ceiling with its back claws.

Propulsion
The Dreadnought is not a fast or nimble ship. Its strength lies in its enormous firepower and considerable crew capacity.

Armament
Primary
The Dreadnought's fusion blaster is a devastating weapon. Its rate of sustainable fire is high, yet many adversaries can be wiped out with only one or two fusion blasts. The energy consumption of this weapon is significant, yet manageable due to the Dreadnought's plentiful energy banks. This weapon is limited somewhat by the Dreadnought's slow turning rate. Fusion blast velocity is relatively slow compared to other weapon systems, causing them to be somewhat inaccurate. Each fusion blast kills six crew members

Secondary
An Ur-Quan captain can also send out pairs of small, one-man fighters armed with lasers to harass the enemy. A swarm of these can team up to puncture an enemy ship's hull in seconds. Each fighter has only a limited supply of life support and fuel and must return to the Dreadnought after its brief sortie. Fighters are not affected by gravity. If they encounter a planet they will 'scoot' around it in short choppy motions. Asteroid collisions are lethal to fighters.

Tactical Overview
The word "finesse" is not present in a Dreadnought captain's vocabulary. Victory is nominally achieved through liberal application of superior firepower. The relatively high firing rate of the main weapon lends itself to this strategy quite nicely, but the Dreadnought's sub-optimal turning rate can complicate things. Fighters vary in effectiveness depending upon what they are deployed against and are usually ideal against slow targets. Be wary, for some ships are equipped with weapon systems which can easily shoot down any number of fighters.

Minutiae
In Star Control I, fighters would die upon contact with the planet.
