A legendary monster, only one living individual of which is known to exist. This beast was described in ancient literature as being unmatched in ferocity and power, leading Admiral ZEX, an obsessive collector of grotesque fauna, to become obsessed with acquiring it. The only known reference to its location was an ancient wildlife book written by an unknown alien author, which ZEX had found and studied. The Beast was said to live on a planet orbiting a yellow star in the constellation "Linch-Nas-Ploh", an eight-star constellation — "Linch-Nas-Ploh", in the aliens' language, meant "the snake-like creature who has swallowed the elephantine beast".

ZEX challenged Captain Zelnick to find this Beast for him before he would turn over his captured Shofixti Maidens. Zelnick agreed, and finally heard of a Beast that might fit this description in his dealings with the Thraddash, finally learning that the yellow star of "Linch-Nas-Ploh" was the Delta star of the constellation humans had named Lyncis.

The creature appears to be the only extant, extremely long-lived member of its species, though there may be an alternate explanation for why only one was found and why the ancients referred to it in the singular. It is classified by Earth xenologists as a "xenoteratomorph", or "alien monster form" — a creature much larger and stronger than roughly equivalent Earth species. In appearance it has a huge head surrounded by barbed tentacle-like appendages along with two longer, three-jointed armlike appendages covered with spikes and blades at the base, with green skin and a red tongue. Because of its large size and robust nervous system, it is highly resistant to stunner bolts, and required several batteries' worth of stun charges from Zelnick's crew's lander before it was incapacitated. Even then, it only took it a few seconds to recover from the stun effects, and required extremely strong magnetic restraints to hold in place. Its extreme aggression and the length and flexibility of its "arms" made it very dangerous to approach; it attacked and injured many members of the Starbase's scientific crew while it was kept there, including xenobiology research team leader Dr. Chu. It appeared to have an instinctive urge to constantly eat, chewing up anything it could get within its reach; upon finding something too hard for its teeth to break, it would rip it to pieces with its arms in frustration. The scientist´s report where this was stated is one of the most hilarious moments in Star Control 2, save the report for the Talking Pet.

Due to the dangerous nature of the Beast, Zelnick transported it to ZEX's private world as quickly as possible. It was unsurprising that ZEX proved overconfident in his ability to control the Beast, and it quickly escaped the control of its handlers and rapidly laid waste to the menagerie, killing and devouring ZEX and his subordinates, before it ran away into the wilderness, leaving Zelnick free to salvage what he could from the ruins.

Glilandy is what the devilish Dnyarri called their homeworld. There is very little information about this planet, but it is speculated to have been a very strange and scary world, given that it's intelligent species developed a ghastly skill to control minds.

An Unfortunate lone Ur-Quan explorer discovered this world little over 22,000 years ago and in doing so unleashed an almost unstoppable evil on the galaxy that ultimately lead to the splitting of the Ur-Quan into the Kzer-Za and the Kohr-Ah,Doctrinal Wars that followed, the and last but not least the Ur-Quan´s ghastly Eternal Doctrine and the just about as evil Path of Now and Forever.

It is likely that this world has been destroyed by Ur-Quan, to prevent species like Dnyarri ever rising from it's surface again.

In The Ur-Quan Masters, the captured Dnyarri pronounces the name of this planet as "Benteflork".

The Sa-Matra is the name given to a Precursor Battleship discovered by the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za. It is the very symbol of Ur-Quan dominance; a virtually invincible war machine that guarentees that the Ur-Quan species will never need know fear of anything.

This weapon was employed against the Alliance of Free Stars during their war with the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za and their Hierarchy of Battle Thralls. It quickly broke the Chenjesu/Mmrnmhrm lines, incinerating conventional vessels at far beyond their own weapons ranges, and led directly to their surrender to the Kzer-Za.

Among the Ur-Quan, the word "Sa-Matra" means "Great Trophy", for that is what it is to them. It is the prize given to the race, Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah or Kzer-Za, who wins the Doctrinal Conflict.

Physically the vessel is huge, blue, with claws, spikes and similar sticking out of it. It has alarge core-like sphere in the middle. It´s weapon systems are the dreaded Repulsion Sphere, intellinget homing weapons that send ships flying a long way. The other is ther Plasma Destrustion Totoids, fireballs that track and destroy any ship in seconds.
213.255.162.162https://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?title=Table_of_bio_types&diff=798Table of bio types2004-09-21T05:55:45Z
213.255.162.162:

The Captain has gone by many names, by many historians. However, most final historical records indicate that the key figure in the defeat of the Ur-Quan Hierarchy was a human named Zelnick. [In particular, there was no default name in the first release of the game; the first act in a new game was to name the commander and the flagship. The 3DO version named the Captain and the flagship Zelnick and the Vindicator, respectively.]

Zelnick was born on the the colony world of Unzervalt and showed an unusual aptitude for reverse-engineering Precursor technology. He captained and piloted the SIS from Unzervalt back to Earth, and is generally agreed to have played a pivotal role in the events of the quadrant from 2154-2159.

Full details on The Captain are sketchy; only one known image is available of Zelnick during his time as a Captain. [This being the Escape Pod sequence.] From it, and from knowledge of the history of Unzervalt itself, we can conclude that Zelnick was human, male, predominantly Caucasian, and under 20 Earth years old at the beginning of his mission.

Zelnick is believed to have had other adventures besides this one, but eventually retired peacefully with the Syreen Talana to Unzervalt.

He is probably one of the most legendary humans ever to travel the stars.
213.255.162.162https://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?title=Dnyarri&diff=429Dnyarri2004-09-16T04:57:19Z
213.255.162.162:

The Dnyarri were an extremely ancient and evil race who could control the minds of others. Their discovery by an young Ur-Quan scout led to the quick collapse of the Sentient Milieu, to the thousands of years of Ur-Quan slavery and their race´s eventual splitting in to the Kzer-Za and the Kohr-Ah.
They can be best described as the Ultimate Evil.
213.255.162.162https://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?title=SIS&diff=384SIS2004-09-15T06:32:31Z
213.255.162.162:

SIS stands for "Super-Integrated Starship", and is the internal name in the code for the flagship flown by The Captain. It is known universally as "The Vindicator" though the name can be changed during the game.
213.255.162.162https://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?title=Talk:Human&diff=2205Talk:Human2004-09-14T09:11:14Z
213.255.162.162:

Oh, for God's sake. Someone's feeling cynical.

This is not how humans are portrayed in the SC2 universe, anyway. The human society of the future is much more peaceful and rational than the nations of today, and even at our worst we aren't as bad as many of the fictional races portrayed in the game. It shows as much lack of imagination to claim that human beings are the worst possible race in the universe as to claim they are the best.

And why does everyone pick on the last 2000 years? Human beings have been fighting for much longer than that. Is this some misguided attempt to blame Christianity in particular for the bad things of the world, or something?

------------

Indeed. The last 2000 years, and actually, the last 100, represent the human society at its best. World War one.Hitler. Stalin. World War two. Auscwhitz. Birkenau. Normandy. Hiroshima. Arnheim. Iwo Jima. Berlin E/W. Vietnam. Nuff said.
------------

It is not conclusively proven that Humans and Syreen are cross-fertile. The only things known for sure are that Zelnick is telling is telling the tale to his "grandchildren" at the end of the game, and that those grandchildren are not obvious Human/Syreen hybrids. There are several explanations for this:

* Humans and Syreen are cross-fertile; human pigmentation genes (melanin) are dominant and thus will not appear in offspring if a Syreen appears at only one point. Syreen are, for all practical purposes, another race of humans (but are not Humans -- this term reserved for the Earthlings).
* Humans and Syreen can breed, but the offspring are not fertile; these children look human because they are -- Zelnick and Talana's children adopted. Syreen are hominids, but not (small-h) human.
* Humans and Syreen cannot breed; Zelnick and Talana themselves adopted. Solves all these problems neatly.
* Humans and Syreen may or may not be able to breed. We don't know, because on Unzervalt, "Grandfather" is simply a term of respect for the aged. Unlikely at best.

------------

Er, we don't know exactly to what degree Syreen are blue, or why. I'm assuming there's
some blue pigmentation in their skin, but whatever it is is actually pretty faint, and
may only appear as blue as it does because of the radiation of their native sun; in the
scene where Talana appears to Zelnick at the end of the game, she barely looks blue at
all, probably 'cause it doesn't show well in the light of the Starbase. Maybe the light
on Unzervalt is more similar to the lighting on the Starbase than to the Syreen ships'
lighting or Syra's lighting.

See the image here for what I mean:

I see little reason to believe humans and Syreen aren't meant to be implied to be
cross-fertile. Maybe it's me reading into the authors' minds, but then the authors
did choose what to show and what not to show intentionally -- we shouldn't treat
the game as though it were a real-life record, random bits and pieces of information
falling into our laps; it's like a real-life documentary, where the director shows
us certain facts because we're meant to take home a correct interpretation based
on those facts. In this case the final choice is almost certainly invalid -- kids
might address some random elder as "Grandfather" out of respect, but they wouldn't
refer to the man's wife as "Grandma" in the third person. Believing the children
are second-generation adoptees is even weirder (human/Syreen offspring being
infertile, like mules, is even more of a wrinkle than human/Syreen offspring being
cross-fertile at all).

I think if we weren't meant to understand that humans and Syreen are cross-fertile,
we wouldn't have been presented with these kids as Zelnick and Talana's grandchildren
in the first place, and they would have just been adoring kids asking Zelnick the war
hero about his past. We are meant to take home a pretty big shock at seeing that
Zelnick and Talana are married, and that they've reproduced.

Also I really dispute that there's any need for the kids to be "obvious hybrids",
and that if they aren't it casts doubt on what would otherwise be an obvious
implication (i.e. if Zelnick and Talana were both humans you would *never* think
the ancestry of the kids at the end was in doubt). Grandchildren of an interracial
marriage often don't clearly show signs of being interracial and gravitate to one
side or the other of the racial spectrum by sheer genetic randomness, whether
a particular gene is dominant or not. Especially given that everything about the
end sequence is meant to emphasize the sameness of humans and Syreen rather than
their difference -- Talana is shown to have very human-looking skin with only a
hint of blueness, she speaks in a very casual, human tone without affectation,
and so on. I don't think we're meant to think that Syreen are anything more than
another Homo sapiens subspecies -- and indeed, the physiology of Syreen and humans
are so darn similar that it'd be just as surprising in its own way if they were
so physically alike yet were genetically different enough to not be cross-fertile
(all other hominid subspecies look different enough from us that it's somewhat
unlikely we'd find an individual of them sexually attractive, even with our
closest neighbors, the Neanderthals).
213.255.162.162https://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?title=Hellbore_Cannon&diff=828Hellbore Cannon2004-09-09T04:39:45Z
213.255.162.162:

When it comes to powerful weapons, the first thing you might think of is the Ur-Quan Plasma Fusion Gun. This weapon module, the Hellbore Cannon, is just as powerful. It is unclear whether the Melnorme A.K.A. the Mael-Num developed this weapon or if it is of Precursor origin. No matter, it is the most powerful weapon module available for the Captain´s Precursor Flagship.
213.255.162.162https://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?title=Riku_Nuottaj%C3%A4rvi&diff=268Riku Nuottajärvi2004-09-08T06:31:40Z
213.255.162.162:

A legendary monster, only one living individual of which is known to exist. This beast was described in ancient literature as being unmatched in ferocity and power, leading Admiral ZEX, an obsessive collector of grotesque fauna, to become obsessed with acquiring it. The only known reference to its location was an ancient wildlife book written by an unknown alien author, which ZEX had found and studied. The Beast was said to live in a yellow star in the constellation "Linch-Nas-Ploh", an eight-star constellation -- "Linch-Nas-Ploh", in the aliens' language, meant "the snake-like creature who has swallowed the elephantine beast".

It is classified by Earth xenologists as a "xenoteratomorph", or "alien monster form" -- a creature much larger and stronger than roughly equivalent Earth species. Chu. It appeared to have an instinctive urge to constantly eat, attempting to eat anything it could find, constantly chewing up objects with its extremely sharp, hard teeth- the Tech Team stated that "Whatever it doesn´t eat, it chews, and what it doesn´t chew, well, it just breaks it up into tiny little pieces." This is true indeed, and the Beast is a force to be reckoned with.

Due to the dangerous nature of the Beast, Zelnick transported it to ZEX's private world as quickly as possible. It was unsurprising that ZEX proved overconfident in his ability to control the Beast, and it quickly escaped the control of its handlers and laid waste to the menagerie, killing ZEX and his subordinates, before it ran away into the wilderness, leaving Zelnick free to salvage what he could from the ruins.
213.255.162.162https://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?title=Ur-Quan_Kohr-Ah&diff=210Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah2004-09-08T04:41:56Z
213.255.162.162:

The Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah are one of the two races of the Ur-Quan species. They share many physical characteristics with their Ur-Quan Kzer-Za bretheren, except that their skin is black instead of green. Their race was genetically engineered by the Dnyarri from the main-line of the Ur-Quan species during the height of their slave empire. The Kohr-Ah were designed to be the "effectors" of the slave empire: the builders and warriors.

The Kohr-Ah species follows the Eternal Doctrine. It states that all non-Ur-Quan species are to be exterminated. The Kohr-Ah are, also, taken with the belief of reincarnation. They believe that by destroying other sentients, cleansing them, they will allow those beings the opportunity to be reborn as Ur-Quan. The Kohr-Ah are thus completely remorseless killers, able to stare down into the eyes of a newborn child and kill him. The vast size of the Kohr-Ah fleet makes them immensely powerful, at the very least the equal of the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za.

Currently, the Kohr-Ah are involved in the Doctrinal Conflict. It is an agreement between themselves and the Kzer-Za, whereby both species move in opposite directions across the galaxy, promoting their doctrine upon the worlds they encounter. When the two races meet, they engage in a war to determine which doctrine becomes ascendent and lays claim to the ancient Sa-Matra, a Precursor Battle Platform of immense power.
