During a game of The Ur-Quan Masters, players must decide whether it is worth the risk to land on a dangerous planet in their search for minerals, biological data, and alien artifacts. The various dangers to the planet lander and its crew include lightning strikes, fire storms, earthquakes, and hostile alien lifeforms. Such decisions are especially important at the beginning of the game when the player is weakest and poorest, and less important in the later game as mineral and biological collecting is no longer the main focus. The decision to land on a planet is also affected by the planet's gravity, since this directly affects the amount of fuel used to make the trip.

Formula
(work in progress)

Value = Positives - Negatives

Definition of terms
(proposed)

Positives
*RU - Resource Unit
*BIO - Biological Unit
*OBJ - Artifact; object important to game plot (both main story and optional goals)
Negatives
*G - Gravity - directly proportional to fuel used
*MIN - minimum trips necessary to collect all valuables
*LT - Lightning threat (Class 0 - 8; range 0 - 2 is no threat)
*FT - Fire Storm threat (in °c; 100°c and below is no threat)
*QT - Earthquake threat (Class 0 - 8; range 0 - 2 is no threat)
*BT - Biological threat (Hunter/Wanderer/Coward/Sessile, Extreme/Moderate/Low/Harmless, Fast/Med/Slow/Non)

Modifiers
*LC - Lander Capacity directly affects minimum trips necessary (MIN)
*LM - Lightning Shield affects damage lightning inflicts (LT)
*FM - Fire Storm Shield affects damage fire inflicts (FT)
*QM - Earthquake Shield affects damage earthquakes inflict (QT)
*BM - Biologic Shield affects damage alien biological lifeforms inflict (BT)
*LS - Lander Speed increases potential maneuverability of the lander (FT,QT,BT) [Lightning cannot be avoided]
*LW - Lander Weapon firing rate upgrade potentially affects threat from Biological lifeforms (BT)
*BI - Biological Data Importance decreases once all technology is acquired from Melnorme (ignoring information)

Establishing Value Equivalences
*1 Biological Unit = 2 Interstar Credits (from Melnorme Trader)
*1 Interstar Credit = 1 Fuel Unit (from Melnorme Trader)
*1 Fuel Unit = 20 Resource Units (at Starbase)
*1 Crew Member = 3 Resource Units (at Starbase; at beginning of game)
*1 Planet Lander = 500 Resource Units (at Starbase)
*1 Planet Lander holds 12 crew members

Goal of Formula
Once a formula is constructed and agreed upon, a template can be constructed to perform the calculation for any given planet/moon. With a functional template, a table of the top (100?) planets or star systems with greatest (or lowest) value can be constructed.

The Ur-Quan Masters provides a networked Super Melee arena and point costs for all the ships, but no standardized rules. Thus, different groups of fans have developed different rule sets for putting together their fleets for battle. This page is an attempt to collect all such rule sets and describe them. (If you've played using rules that aren't described here, by all means add them!)

Rules that use point costs
*The standard rules on #uqm-arena: Only one ship of each type, to a maximum of 200 points. Commonly phrased "200 points no dupes".
**In a serious game or tournament you are expected to build your team before connecting, so that you can't base your ship choices on what ships are on your opponent's team.
**Some players and tournament hosts ban Thraddash, considering it unsportsmanlike (the ship has the potential to stall matches and upset balance if played to its limit.)
*Other point limits can be used, although it's less common, since too much fewer than 200 tends to lead to the outcome of the match being determined by the teams used, and too much more doesn't leave much room for choice in team design.
*The game can also be played simply with a point limit and no restriction on duplicate ships; this has fallen out of use since the result depends mostly on the teams used, especially since certain anomalous teams (such as ones with many Chmmr) are very likely to maul a "well balanced" team. A limit of two ships of each type is occasionally played.
*In order to reasonably allow more of the same ship, players can take turns picking ships rather than coming with predetermined fleets.
**Picking one ship at a time creates the strange effect of picking cheap ships first in order to have more points left to counter. A probably better way is to pick a certain number of points worth. For instance, the first player could pick at 100 points worth of ships, then the second player design his entire fleet, then the first player pick the remainder of his fleet.
**50-100-100-100-50 is also possible, and probably leaves less room for the first player to effectively counter the opponent's entire fleet.
*"Crap Fleets" -- In order for some of the less commonly used ships to see use, some players like to play with each player designing the other player's fleet (of course, to a minimum of 200 points rather than a maximum.)
**This can be played with various point totals or allowances for duplicate ships, basically as a modification of any of the rulesets above.
**Each player designing half of each team is also possible.
*Random teams. A good random online random team generator can be found here.
*Random ship selection during melee.
**This is best combined with a ban on the Chmmr Avatar, which tends to heavily skew a match depending on what is drawn against it.
*Another possible modification to any of these rules is to use the Adjusted Ship Price Mod.

Other rulesets
*Alliance vs. Hierarchy: A match with the predetermined teams "Old Alliance Ships" and "Old Hierarchy Ships". It's an interesting match, since the creators of the game went to a great deal of effort to balance it in Star Control 1. On the other hand, it seems to favor the Alliance.
*Auction: Each player gets a pool of "points" (It doesn't really matter how many; 200 and 213 have been used) and each ship except Thraddash is auctioned off to the highest bidder. Details of the auction vary.
**The order the ships are auctioned in is arbitrary; it can be done in alphabetical order or ordered by original point cost, or in other ways.
**What happens if the two players try to bid the same amount can be ambiguous. The cleanest solution is to have the players take turns bidding, the first player to make the high bid buy the ship, and the players also take turns making the first bid on each ship.
**Sometimes a third player acts as auction master, but it isn't necessary if the rules are specified beforehand.
*14 ships no dupes: Essentially any team you can build, as long as it doesn't have two of the same ship on it. Of course, cheap ships will rarely be played, but costly, somewhat overpriced ships (such as Chenjesu and Orz) will see play. Combining this with the "design your opponent's fleet" rule could also be interesting.
*Enemy chosen fleet: Connect to your opponent and build him a fleet worth at least 200 points.
*Point loss system: The victor is whoever loses the least amount of points, not whoever beats all the opponent's ships. So for example, if Bob destroys Bill's fleet, Bob loses 134 points and Bill loses 62 points, Bill wins. There is no limit to how many ships you can have and no points limit.

Silly rulesets (also ideas for handicap)
*Left-turning: Ships can't turn to right - only to left.
*Left-to-Right: Deploy ships to the battle in the order they are on your fleet list, starting from the left, going to the right.
*Play with extreme controllers such as a dance pad or something you've built yourself.
*Play with your left hand
*Play when drunk

Professor Zorg's Guide to Alien Etiquette is a collection of humorous answers and responses included in the Star Control package and used in the game's copy-protection.

The words in it inspired the name of a number of races in Star Control 2: Orz, Slylandro, Supox, Thraddash, Utwig, Zoq-Fot-Pik. Some of the phrases also contain the captain names of various races.

In Star Control 2, professor Zorg has been "called off on urgent matters of inter-galactic significance", leaving the player to handle the Starmap Trivia Quiz on his own.
Notes
* Default resolution is 640x480. For 320x240 screens, add "-r 320x240" to command line. See the build instructions page on how to do that by creating a shortcut.
* This binary is compiled from the 0.6.2 sources of The Ur-Quan Masters, therefore 0.6.2 content must be used
* For PDAs other than Dell Axim x51v, might have to play around with starcon.key in "\SD Card\games\UQM\content\uqm-0.6.0-~wince-*.zip" (for the key settings)
* Screen orientation is hard-coded to landscape
* Patches to corresponding third party libraries can be found on the build instructions page.

Downloads
Binaries and config files only, no packages

Installation
Extract uqm-full.zip into the root of your SD card. If you have the old version, you only need uqm-no-content.zip, and can install it over top.

If your screen is cut off
There is an extra setup option controlling the scaling and offset of the image on screen. Adjust the sliders to ensure that all four green borders are visible on screen.

Using the 3DO packages
They should all work but aren't included in the zip file. Since the Wii port is built on the UQM svn, I don't think you can use the package from the download section. You can get them here, using the "download as tarball" link at the bottom. Add-ons on the SVN. (Don't forget to extract the files from the tarball once you have downloaded it). It is highly recommended that you zip them into a .uqm file, rather than placing all of the individual files onto your SD card. This is because the Wii file access libraries seem quite slow at opening many small files at once.

Controls
Defaults to Player 1 on Wiimote 1, Player 2 on Wiimote 2. Hold the Wiimote sideways, like an NES controller. Button 1 is OK/fire, Button 2 is Cancel/Special. Plus and Minus scroll/zoom, and the home button activates your escape hyperdrive. You can also use the nunchuck if you prefer, stick controls the ship, A fires, B is special. (Since both work, be careful how you hold the wiimote, as pushing B will still be cancel/special!) In theory you can add to the config files to allow you to also use the Classic Controller attachment, and it will still be considered Joystick 1/2, just with different button/hats. The Wiibrew Wiki entry on SDL has information on the button and axis mappings.

In the config menu you can change either player to use a game cube controller. A and B for OK and fire, d-pad or left stick for directions, the C stick scrolls and zooms. The Start button is hyperdrive.

Source
Source Code
Built using r3185 from the SVN. Source file includes only the .diff patch, not all of the UQM code. The .diff now includes updates to the configuration scripts, so running build.sh should work properly. A readme file is included with details on how to set your environment variables so it will work.

The file "lwp_config.h" needs to replace the old one in your libogc source, so that there are enough mutexes.

The file "pthread.h" needs to go into your includes path somewhere. It is a wrapper to make the LWP library in libogc behave like the standard pthread library.

Libraries Required to Build
SDL Wii r63. Later versions have a bizarre screen update bug.

"inofficial" libfat fork Forked version is needed because it supports caching, and the main did not. (May have changed).

"inofficial" libogc fork Forked version is needed because the official libogc only uses MEM1, which is not enough memory for UQM.

You also need libvorbis / tremor and libpng. dhewg has provided these libraries pre-compiled here, though cross-compiling them is easy also.

Hopefully that is all of them! Don't forget to run elf2dol on the "uqm" or "uqm-debug" file you get out of the build script.

Known Issues
Latest version seems stable, but did have one crash when selecting the next ship too fast during Sa-Matra fight. Save often, especially if the music stops playing unexpectedly.

__NOTOC__

The Chmmr Avatar is the culmination of the Mmrnmhrm and Chenjesu's combined technological prowess, replacing both the X-Form and Broodhome. The Avatar boasts the greatest firepower of any war ship to see mass-production in our region of space. As The Process was initiated with the intent of creating a race powerful enough to defeat the Ur-Quan Hierarchy, it is assumed that the Avatar was designed specifically for the purpose of defeating the Ur-Quan.

Propulsion
The Avatar possesses slightly higher maximum speed, acceleration and turning rate than both the Ur-Quan Dreadnought and Kohr-Ah Marauder; its mobility is roughly average. It is quite large, however, and appropriate care should be taken near gravity wells.

Armament
Primary
The Chmmr have designed the most devastating laser in the galaxy, so powerful that it ionizes the solar wind, causing visible sparkles in the void. Capable of burning through the toughest of armor in seconds, this laser makes head-to-head weapon exchanges with the Avatar a suicidal proposition. Some sources describe this primary weapon as a "heavy X-ray laser."1 Unlike the other laser weapons, the Avatar's laser kills two enemy crew members per hit. While undeniably powerful, this weapon's range is quite short.

Secondary
The Avatar is also outfitted with a powerful tractor beam that is capable of pulling ships into the Avatar's maw by generating a field of artificial gravity. The effect of the tractor beam also depends on the mass of the targeted spaceship. However, a massive ship must also be fast in order to not succumb to the pull of this device. Slow ships and lightweight ships will inevitably be dragged in. Non-inertial spacecraft, being unaffected by gravity, are immune to the tractor beam.

Additional
In addition to its already formidable arsenal, the Avatar is orbited by three automated laser turrets nicknamed "ZapSats". These are intended as both a form of protection and close range fire support. ZapSats will shoot repeatedly at any enemy projectile or ship within their reach. Given their high rate of fire, ZapSats are quite effective at negating a variety of different weapon systems. While all three ZapSats are functional, the Avatar is virtually unassailable when pitted against certain adversaries. Each ZapSat has 10 hit points.

Tactical Overview
While the Avatar is not the fastest of ships, its tractor beam indirectly increases its speed. With judicious use of the tractor beam, the main weapon can quickly be brought to bear on many unfortunate foes. The tractor beam can also be used to interrupt an opponent's gravity whip or even pull an opponent into the planet. However, both the main laser and the tractor beam can deplete the Avatar's power banks if overused. Indiscriminate use of the tractor beam can also send an opponent into a high speed trajectory, potentially giving them an advantage.

Ships that typically fare the best against the Avatar are those which can maintain a position outside of the Avatar's weapon range and shoot through its satellite ring. Ships capable of shielding themselves from damage can also threaten the Avatar by using their shield to overcome the Avatar's overwhelming firepower and attacking it from beyond its reach when able. The Avatar is much easier to defeat after its ring of ZapSats has been destroyed.
The Flagship refers to the Precursor vessel flown by The Captain in Star Control II. Despite its immense size by both Alliance and Hierarchy standards, The Flagship is actually a Precursor tugboat designed as a multi-purpose "workhorse".1 The ship itself is a framework to which a combination of separate enhancement modules can be attached. Along the spine of the ship are sixteen slots for mounting any of the variety of multi-function modules (those modules that house crew, provide storage space, supply energy, or are weapons), while navigation-related modules are mounted along the ship's outriggers. Because The Flagship is incapable of planetfall, it can also carry up to ten Planet Landers, which are useful for collecting resources (minerals and biological data) and artifacts from a planet's surface. Planet Lander missions are generally preceded by a thorough scan for minerals (using low-power deep-radar),2 large organisms (by detecting the substances they absorb and/or excrete)3 and energy sources, which usually indicate the presence of alien artifacts. While it is possible to configure The Flagship for combat, it also can support a escort fleet of up to twelve combat ships which can accompany and protect The Flagship as it travels through space.

The Flagship is also known as the Vindicator, the default name on the 3DO version of Star Control II, though the name can be changed during the game. The name SIS (an abbreviation for Super Integrated Starship) is also sometimes used; it is how the ship is referred to internally in the code, but never in the actual game or manuals.

Navigation
Two types of modules affect The Flagship's maneuverability and speed: Turning Jets and Thrusters. Turning Jets allow the Flagship to rotate faster, a necessity for avoiding and out-maneuvering hostiles in combat or in open space. A maximum of eight pairs can be mounted on The Flagship's outriggers, each pair increasing the turn rate by two units. Thrusters affect both the acceleration and the top speed of The Flagship in regular space and in HyperSpace. Each pair of Thrusters (there are slots for eleven pairs) increases the maximum velocity by eight units. The Thrusters are absolutely essential for travel through HyperSpace where a ship will come to a halt if it does not constantly thrust. Note, however, that additional thrusters do not change the fuel cost for traveling through HyperSpace, but they do allow the ship to get to the destination more quickly.

Armament
As The Flagship is a modular vessel, its armament is completely dependent on how it has been outfitted. The armament configuration is usually guided by the necessities of the current mission. The Flagship can become a very powerful vessel in combat when augmented by advanced technology available from the Melnorme. Alternatively, it can rely on escort ships for protection.

Primary
The Flagship can mount three different kinds of primary weapons modules: the Ion-Bolt Gun, the Fusion Blaster, and the Hellbore Cannon, in order of increasing offensive power and energy drain. Only four slots, the front three and the rear slots, can accommodate a primary weapon module. The slot a weapon module is mounted in also determines the direction of fire. In the first slot a module will fire a single shot directly forward; in the second slot, two shots in a spread diagonally forward and to either side; in the third slot, two shots directly sideways to either side; and in the rear, one shot directly backwards. It is also possible to mount a combination of different types of weapon modules and mount multiple modules in different slots at the same time. However, mounting multiple weapon modules increases the drain on the ship's battery, making it necessary to manage the Flagship's energy supply to maintain combat effectiveness.

The Flagship's primary weapons system can be enhanced by the addition of Auto-Tracking Systems, which impart a homing capability to the projectiles The Flagship fires. The addition of multiple tracking systems will enhance this homing effect. The maximum homing effect can be achieved with three of these systems; mounting additional systems beyond this point is useless. The tracking systems, when combined with judicious placement of weapon modules in specific slots, allow The Flagship to unleash incredible destruction with a single salvo.

Secondary
The Flagship's optional secondary weapons system is a Point-Defense Laser similar in design to the one used on the Earthling Cruiser. Its strength can be enhanced by adding additional modules if desired. The mere presence of a point-defense system is enough to dissuade an Orz Nemesis or the Ur-Quan Dreadnought from launching their crew against The Flagship.

History
The Flagship was constructed by an abandoned Precursor factory on the planet Unzervalt. Construction inadvertently began in about when Jules Farnsworth initiated the factory's prime function — building starships. The initial stages of the construction occurred within the factory's cavern, with the The Flagship's spine being the first section built. Soon after this the construction transitioned outside the cavern, onto the planet's surface. Finally, after another ten years, construction halted prior to completion when the factory had exhausted all the available resources. Although the resulting vessel was capable of interstellar travel, it was a mere skeleton of a starship, equipped only with a Crew Pod, a Fuel Tank, a Storage Bay, a single Ion-Bolt, one Planet Lander, and two pairs each of Thrusters and Turning Jets. Because the starship's controls were designed for Precursors and not Humans, the Human colonists created an automated control system by removing central control computer of the factory from the cavern and installing it on the ship. This also required that the only person able to communicate with the computer, a young man who would become The Captain, accompany the small crew headed by Captain I. Burton.

As starship was approaching the edge of the Vela star system, it acquired its first escort vessel, the drifting and derelict Tobermoon. Since Burton was the only one capable of piloting the Tobermoon, command of the starship was given over to The Captain. The two ships then began the long trip through HyperSpace to Earth. However, the starship's passage through HyperSpace did not go unnoticed. An Ur-Quan Dreadnought detected the starship's HyperSpace trail, but although it lost the trail, the Dreadnough was able to follow the trail back to the Human colony on Unzervalt. Five days out from Sol the starship also had an encounter with a Slylandro Probe, which quickly homed in on the larger vessel. The Tobermoon was able to intercept the Probe, allowing the starship to escape into HyperSpace, but the cruiser was disabled and Burton was killed in the attack.

This starship becomes The Flagship of the New Alliance of Free Stars and is integral in that group's completion of its ultimate objective. Since the New Alliance lacks an actual fleet, The Flagship serves as the principal means of exploration, resource gathering, establishing diplomatic relations, and, on some occasions, intimidating enemy forces. As Commander Hayes notes, The Flagship represents "a 'stick' of awesome power" when dealing with alien races. However, as the Spathi are quick to point out, its primary flaw is that it remains one-of-a-kind. Sadly, it has to be sacrificed to destroy the Sa-Matra and thereby end the Ur-Quan threat, by delivering and providing additional power to the Chmmr-improved Utwig Bomb.

Trivia
In the PC version The Flagship's engine was green unlike in 3DO/UQM version, where it is red. In Ur-Quan Masters the only screens where the engine is still green are the outfit screen and Starbase Commander Hayes' screen.

incomplete

The Star Control 1 manual mentions "Inspired by the Works of Fiction of: Orson Scott Card, Larry Niven, Andre Norton, David Brin, Robert A. Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, Jack Vance, Alan Dean Foster, Keith Laumer, A.E. Van Vogt, E.E. "Doc" Smith, Joe Halderman, Dan Simmons, Fred Saberhagen and 100 worthy others."

Alien design
The name Androsynth is taken from the Greek "andros" ("man") and "synthetic" from Greek "syn" ("together") and "thesis" ("put"), or as the Star Control II manual says it "fake men".

The Ilwrath were named after a friend of the creators (XXX: both?) named McIlwraith.

The name Melnorme is a reference to jazz singer Mel Tormé.

The Mycon is taken from the Greek prefix "myc-" or "myco-", which means Fungus.

The Orz and the disappearance of the Androsynth were influenced by H. P. Lovecraft's writings. (XXX: need more exact references).

Utricularia, as in Supox Utricularia, is a genus of carnivorous plants more commonly known as Bladderwort.

The Shofixti are inspired by the historical Japanese culture.
"Kyabetsu", the name of the former Shofixti homeworld, means "cabbage". The tiny main gun of their Scout ships is called the Mendokusai Energy Dart; "Mendoukusai" in Japanese means "irritating; bothersome."

The Syreen are based on the Sirens from classical mythology. They were sea nymphs who would use enchanting song to lure ships onto the cliffs.

The Yehat are inspired in part by the Scottish clans and by David Brin's Uplift series.

Larry Niven influences
A number of aliens draw some of their inspiration from Niven's Known Space novels. Fred and Paul have openly admitted in a 1998 IRC chat to being influenced by these novels.
*The Dnyarri are very similar in description, powers, and history to the Thrintun race, "a long-extinct species which ruled the galaxy through telepathic mind control."
*The Precursors are also slightly similar to the Thrintun who likewise left behind relics to be used by the modern-day characters in Niven's novels and who were given a vague moniker, "Slavers", by later races since their real name was unknown. The Precursors also bear some passing similarity to the Pak.
*Though not physiologically, the Spathi resemble less advanced versions of the cowardly Pierson's Puppeteers.
*The Arilou, in their speculated capacity as genetic manipulators of humanity, are also similar to the Puppeteers.
*The Melnorme, like the Outsiders, are traveling merchants who trade in information.

Dialog
The Arilou's final remark "Be seeing you..." may be a reference to the tv series The Prisoner.

The Captain's remark to the Pkunk "Hey! Bird-brains! Got any fruit loops? Har-har-har!" refers to a brand of breakfast cereal called Fruit Loops, which features a toucan resembling the Pkunk as its mascot.

One of the gods that the Ilwrath used to worship was called "Awk of Seds", a reference to the text processing programs awk and sed.

The Pkunk say that they insult their foes to keep from "wrapping around" to evil; this is a programmer's joke about the nature of integers under the C programming language (and many others.) If you increase a number past its maximum (for example, 128 in an 8 bit integer) it suddenly becomes negative (-127, in this example.)

Tanaka's opening comments, "you killed my father, my mother, my many brothers, all six of my sisters - prepare to die," may pay homage to the movie The Princess Bride, in which the character Inigo Montoya has prepared a similar comment for when he confronts his father's murderer, Count Rugen.

When the Spathi Safe Ones ask the player for the Secret Spathi Cypher, one of the incorrect options is "Wagh-nagl Fthagn", which spelled a little bit differently ("Wgah'nagl Fhtagn") comes from "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!", a liturgical phrase in H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos.

One of the other options for the Spathi Cypher, "Gort, merenga!" comes from the movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still".

When you choose the aggressive lines to speak towards the Slylandro Probes, the third time you get the response "ENACTING THIRD LAW." before combat is initiated. This refers to Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics. The third law says "A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.". The Probe's version must not have the first clause as the first law says "A robot may not harm a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.". (Alternatively, its First Law applies to solely to its creator race, which grant humans and other sentients no special protection.) Also the Slylandro will go "to seek out new life and new civilizations, to go where no catalog item 2418 Remote Self-replicating robot probe had gone before." when asked about the programming of the probes, a reference to Star Trek.

When the Utwig are trying to tell you what to do with the Precursor Bomb, at one point they say that the "Bomb must be...Hugged." This is likely a reference to the movie Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

One of the ways that the Utwig determined that the Ultron could have been saved was by cushioning the fall with a fuzzy wumpus. A Wumpus is a mysterious monster from the famous, early computer game Hunt the Wumpus.

When describing the Kohr-Ah, the Utwig say that their stated purpose is "to seek out new life and new civilizations...and then annihilate them," a clear play on the mission statement of the Starship Enterprise of Star Trek fame.

The description of the constellation that is described as "the snake-like creature who has swallowed the elephantine beast" in the DOS version ("the long, thin creature who has swallowed the huge beast." in the 3DO version and UQM) is a reference to the children's book Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, which describes and shows an image of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant.

"Cheep-Guava", the name of the head of the Yehat revolution, is a pun on "Che Guevara", the Cuban revolutionary leader.

When first meeting the Zoq-Fot-Pik at their homeworld, they warn you not to try stealing their atmosphere, a reference to Spaceballs.

When The Captain gets to choose the name for the new alliance, one of his options is "The United Federation of Worlds", a reference to the United Federation of Planets from Star Trek. Starbase Commander Hayes will reply to this choice by saying "we will make it so", another reference to Star Trek, where captain Jean-Luc Picard would frequently order to "make it so".

The Mosquito Mange is mentioned in the Androsynth computer records immediately prior to their disappearance. It is a reference to the term found in Roadside Picnic refering to graviconcentrates - areas of heightened and directed gravity.

The Roadside Picnic might also be the inspiration for the 'Empties'. In the novel they are one of the common alien artifacts found in the Zones. In the game they are a Precursor artifact that Commander Hayes mentions in relation to the Ultron.

Commander Hayes mentions early on that the Ur-Quan annihilated Buenos Aires. This is most likely a reference to Robert Heinlein's novel Starship Troopers, where the alien race humanity is fighting against similarly destroy Argentina's capital.

Commander Hayes also mentions that when the Ur-Quan destroyed much of mankind's history, they also destroyed several places without any known value. These places likely correspond to locations in popular fiction and mythology. They are:
*"kilometer of land in central Iraq" - possibly the biblical Babel, The Nameless City from the works of H. P. Lovecraft, or Iram of the Pillars
*"several targets in the Amazon rain forest" - possibly El Dorado or simply just other undiscovered city centers in the Amazon jungle
*"something deep under the surface [of the Antarctic icecap]" - possibly a reference to the alien city discovered in H. P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness
*"broad swath of the ocean floor in the south-eastern Atlantic" - possibly Atlantis
Constellation names
According to the HyperSpace starmap, the names for the HyperSpace constellations were taken from "traditional astronomical designations." These are the in-game star and constellation names that don't directly correspond to real life astronomical designations. (Some, such as Lalande and Wolf, appear to be derived from astronomical designations).
*Almagest is a reference to the Almagest, an astronomical treatise written by Claudius Ptolemaius and describing his geocentric theory.
*Arianni may be a reference to Ariane rockets, which were the primary launch vehicle of the European Space Agency in the latter portion of the 20th century. An alternative origin may be the planet Ariannus from the original Star Trek.
*Brahe is a reference to Tycho Brahe, the famous Danish astronomer of the 16th century.
*Chandrasekhar is a reference to the Indian-American astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, famous for his work on stellar evolution and black holes.
*Copernicus is a reference Nicolaus Copernicus, the polish astronomer who proposed the sun was the center of the solar system.
*Gorno is a possible reference to the Gorn, a race in Star Trek.
*Hyginus is a reference to the attributed author of Poeticon astronomicon.
*Hyperion is a reference to the main setting of Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos.
*Illuminati is a reference to a variety of conspiracy theories, especially those of the Bavarian Illuminati.
*Kepler is a reference to Johannes Kepler who discovered the three laws of planetary motion.
*Klystron is a reference to a kind of vacuum tube used in early radar systems.
*Lentilis is probably a reference to the Lentili from David Brin's short story Sshhh ....
*Lipi
*Maksutov is likely a reference to the Maksutov telescope invented by the Russian optician Dimtri Maksutov.
*Mersenne is a reference to Marin Mersenne a Minim friar who lived in France from 1588-1648 and was a major founder of number theory.
*Metis is a moon of Jupiter, and correspondingly a character in Roman mythology.
*Olber is likely a reference to Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers, a German astronomer.
*Organon is likely a reference to either Francis Bacon's book The New Organon or Aristotle's Organon, after which Bacon's book was named. Alternatively it could be a reference to Organia, an important location in Star Trek, or to the Organa family in the Star Wars universe.
*Ptolemae is a reference to Claudius Ptolemaius, an ancient astronomer whose Geocentric views Copernicus replaced.
::I agree. Only the first letter (like the "L" of "List of") should be capitalized, subsequent words only if they are proper nouns (like "Melnorme") or an acronym (like "FAQs").

Nicknamed as the SIS — the name which the internal game code uses — the Super Integrated Starship is the flagship flown by The Captain. It is also known as the Vindicator, the default name on the 3DO version of Star Control II, though the name can be changed during the game. The initial structure was created by the automated Precursor base on Unzervalt.

The ship proper is just a framework that Modules can be attached to. The modules have varying effects from increasing the ship's manuverability and speed to storing crew and other supplies. The ship can also be fitted with a host of weapons and energy systems as well as having docking space for up to 12 other smaller ships.

This ship becomes the flagship of the New Alliance of Free Stars and is integral in that group's completion of its ultimate objective.
