			It struck me as odd that the Pkunk of all people would have the ship most perfect for taking out the Sa-Matra's defenses. It's just weird. But then I thought about the Pkunk's psychic abilities, and it comes into perfect view -- they knew on some subconscious level, that this was the necessary design.

The reason for removing the ship-specific tactics, as I recall, was because it was highly dependent on the opponent - some of them were written as if going up against the computer and other as if going against a live person of unknown competence. With the Sa-Matra, that really doesn't come into play since there is never a possibility of a player-controlled Sa-Matra (now that would a interesting mod). Given that, and that it's highly likely that the player will get a number of Furies before the battle, and that (like you said) it is pretty universally accepted, I'd say we can ignore the taboo on ship-specific tactics in this instance with respect to the Sa-Matra.
