Rand was a human captain on the starcruiser Far Voyager that made first contact with the VUX near Beta Mira.
He made a diplomatic blunder when he insulted the looks of a VUX Captain on com-screen, not knowing that the VUX were already understanding his every word via translator.
Needles to say, a battle ensued...
