The Star Control 2 music remixing project started in August 2002 – At the same time as when Toys For Bob released the partially ported sources of the 3DO version of Star Control 2 to the fan community.
Riku Nuottajärvi got the idea for remixing all of the 69 Star Control 2 songs for the remake – but the project just looked too big for one composer to do alone. Toys For Bob was really interested in Riku’s idea for bringing all of the music to the "new age" – so they asked him to manage the project and invite people from the fan community to join the remixing project.
All the original composers were contacted and the fan community was informed about the ongoing project. A lot of people were involved in the project, but sadly, many of them "vanished" while the project went on. However, at the same time, the core group started to form.
After many months of work, the core group of remixers formed Precursors in October 2003. Precursors is the collective effort of four individual artists; Riku Nuottajärvi (author of some of the original songs in the 1992 version of Star Control 2, including the Hyperspace background music), Jouni Airaksinen, Tore Aune Fjellstad and Espen Gätzschmann. The fourth, and final, remix pack was released in 2012.
Precursors' mission is to bring, to all Star Control 2 fans, wonderful Star Control 2 inspired music – not just re-makes of the old songs, but also totally different versions and brand new songs.
