The Ur-Quan Kzer-Za and Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah both choose to act as though they are superior to all other races they encounter (and if their conquests are any indication, they may very well be right). Part of this superiority forbids them from condescending to even speak to lower life forms directly. Instead they use Talking Pets — a form of genetically modified Dnyarri — who serve as intermediaries. The Ur-Quan speaks to the Pet and the Pet then speaks to the alien ship captain.
