Dataplates were a class of items originally planned for Star Control II but later removed in favor of "more interesting, more tangible things," as explained by the creators in an email communication. While explicitly stated, these were probably intended to be Precursor in origin, similar to the knowledge tablets found in the Full Game campaigns of Star Control. Commander Hayes also refers to DataPlates found in a cave on Pluto as evidence of the Precursors' widespread, former presence in the galaxy.
