Rand was a human captain on the starcruiser "Far Voyager" that made first contact with the VUX near Beta Mira.
He made a diplomatic Blunder when he insulted the looks of a VUX Captain on com-screen, not knowing that the VUX were already understanding his every word via translator.
Needles to say a battle ensued...
