Mycon Deep Child

Rough article

The Mycon Deep Child is a specialized, genetically engineered member of the Mycon species. Unlike the typical Mycon, the Deep Child is about 25 meters tall when it hatches from its "egg" shell. The Deep Child aggressively terraform planets for expanding the Mycon's Sphere of Influence. The Mycon also call them the "dwellers in the Mohorovichic" since the embed themselves at the Mohrovichic discontinuity, the transition boundary within a planet between the mantle and the crust.

Hatching from an egg is probably unique to this type of Mycon, as most of the literature states that Mycon's reproduce by "budding". In this sense, the "egg" is probably not a real egg (like a bird or reptile egg) but might just be the genetic adaptation designed for the entry into the planet's interior. The Deep Child sheds the egg case as it penetrates beneath the crust.

A Birthing Fleet usually accompanies the Deep Child to the victim planet, protecting and assisting it in its inert form. The Birthing Fleet launches the Deep Child spore-pod at the planet. The Deep Child strikes the planet with so much force solid rock flows like liquid. The "egg case" allows the Deep Child to penetrate through the planet's crust into the mantle.

Once embedded beneath the crust, the Deep Child grows several, fibrous tendrils in all directions. These tendrils then thrust upwards, creating huge calderas all across the planet surface. This process can take anywhere from months to a year. From the huge calderas, the planet's atmosphere is filled with clouds of super-heated steam and sulphuric acid. The planetary crust is completely broken apart, and hot magma flows across the surface in large rivers. With these cataclysmic changes, the Deep Child creates the preferred environment of the Mycon. The altered planets are known as Shattered Worlds.

Arilou

The Mycon change and reform worlds with their Deep Children. These changes affect others unfortunately. The fate of your world and your heart relate to these matters.

Commander (analysis)

We didn't really know Mycon came from eggs, but our analysis of this sheath. Further study shows that it has been subjected to phenomenal temperatures and pressures. The most unusual aspect of the egg case is its size we know Mycons range in height from .5 to 3.5 meters but our reconstruction of the whole egg case shows it to be over 25 meters high!

NEAR AN UNUSUAL VOLCANIC FUMAROLE, WE HAVE FOUND A FRAGMENT OF SOME KIND OF BIOLOGICAL ENCASEMENT OR SHELL WHICH IS MADE OF AN INCREDIBLY TOUGH, HEAT-RESISTANT MAT OF FUNGAL FIBERS. WE CAN FIND NO SIGN OF ANY LIFEFORM WHICH MAY HAVE `HATCHED' FROM THIS EGG SHELL, BUT WE WILL BRING BACK A SAMPLE OF THE MATERIAL TO THE FLAGSHIP FOR FURTHER STUDY.

Druuge

...tough, fungal mats discarded by the Mycon Deep Children as they penetrate a planet's crust.

Melnorme

The Mycon colonize planets by launching tough spore-pods from orbit and injecting them under the planet's surface. Months later, after the spores have grown hundreds of thick, fibrous tendrils under the planet's crust the tendrils suddenly thrust up out of the planet and create huge calderas

not incidentally filling the planet's atmosphere with the Mycon's preferred gases clouds of super-heated steam and sulphuric acid.

The Deep Children are part of Juffo-Wup -- home builders. The dwellers in the Mohorovichic.
A cold rock, spinning silently in the Void, a womb for the Children.
The Deep Children! Spears of light in the darkness! Their discarded husks speak of joy to come.
In the dark they grow, the deep fire feeds the Children. Their birth breathes warmth across a cold world.
The Deep Children fall from the Void, gathering speed for the penetration. The tough casing warms as it passes through the atmosphere, glowing white as it hits the surface solid rock flows like liquid, and the child slips into the warm, safe depths beneath the crust.
The implantation fleet has assembled in orbit above the green world, the patterns of weakness reveal the point of introduction, The Child is prepared for its birthing trip, Release!

These fragments... they are IDENTICAL to the debris we found near the punctures on Syra! We never guessed that the fragments might be organic! To have survived re-entry!... nothing organic would remain!... unless, UNLESS, it was genetically constructed for this purpose! AND ONLY THE MYCONS POSSESS THIS CAPABILITY!!
What was odd was that unlike most other meteors, this one was not pulverized on impact. It penetrated the crust, and indeed went all the way through to the mantle causing a major caldera... kind of a super volcano. The earthquakes caused by the impact were severe. The magma pumped out of the caldera wreaked significant damage on the nearby terrain but within a few weeks, it had cooled, forming a solid rock bandage over the wound. Within a few months we had cleaned up the mess, the caldera was calming down nicely and things were pretty much back to normal. Then, just over a year after the impact, all hell broke loose on the surface of Syra. Huge calderas were opening all over... not just around the meteor impact, but everywhere!
