Below is the classification of Star Control races by various criteria.

This section classifies races by their initial attitute towards The Captain. (note that any friendly race may be rendered hostile by attacking it)

Arilou Lalee'lay
Chenjesu (cannot be attacked; undergoing The Process)
Chmmr (alliance after freeing them from the slave shield; cannot be attacked)
Druuge (later hostile)
Humans (player race; cannot be attacked)
Melnorme
Mmrnmhrm (cannot be attacked; undergoing The Process)
Orz (alliance immediately after requesting it)
Pkunk
Supox (alliance after returning the Ultron to the Utwig)
Syreen (alliance after returning them their Penetrators from the Syreen Vault; cannot be attacked)
Zoq-Fot-Pik (alliance after visiting their homeworld)
Keel-Verezy (minor race)

Slylandro (though their Probes are hostile due to a bug)
Spathi (Fwiffo may be made friends with; alliance after exterminating the Evil Ones)
Umgah (hostile after being taken over by the neo-Dnyarri; friendly after becoming their Great Hero; hostile after becoming their Great Enemy)
Utwig (alliance after returning the Ultron)

Androsynth (minor race)
Dnyarri/neo-Dnyarri (though with the Taalo Shield you can force him to cooperate)
Ilwrath (except while The Captain is impersonating Dogar and Kazon, and while they're attacking the Thraddash)
Mycon (neutral at Beta Brahe 1)
Shofixti (friendly after insulting them three times; alliance after species is reborn)
Thraddash (alliance after becoming their Great Teacher; hostile after stealing their Aqua Helix)
Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah
Ur-Quan Kzer-Za (neutral after they lose the Doctrinal Conflict)
VUX (Admiral ZEX is friendly, becomes hostile when given the VUX Beast, immediately killed by the Beast)
Yehat (Yehat rebels are friendly)

Chenjesu (crystalline)
Chmmr (crystalline and mechanical)
Mael-Num (one-eyed creatures)
Melnorme (unusual; piggy bank-like?)
Mmrnmhrm (robotic)
Fot — the one from the back (unusual; appears to have some kind of leaf; resembles a clock)
Pik — the rightmost one (unusual; spring-like)
Umgah (blobs with lots of mouths, eyes and tentacles)
Mycon (ambulatory fungus)
Slylandro (gas bags)
Taalo (rock-like)
VUX (cross between humanoid and squid-like)
Precursors (shaggy non-bipedal giants)
