This article classifies Star Control races by various criteria.

Attitude towards The Captain

This section classifies races by their initial attitute towards The Captain. (note that any friendly race may be rendered hostile by attacking it)

Friendly

• Arilou Lalee'lay
• Chenjesu (cannot be attacked; undergoing The Process)
• Chmmr (alliance after freeing them from the slave shield; cannot be attacked)
• Druuge (later hostile)
• Humans (player race; cannot be attacked)
• Melnorme
• Mmrnmhrm (cannot be attacked; undergoing The Process)
• Orz (alliance immediately after requesting it)
• Pkunk
• Supox (alliance after returning the Ultron to the Utwig)
• Syreen (alliance after returning them their Penetrators from the Syreen Vault; cannot be attacked)
• Zoq-Fot-Pik (alliance after visiting their homeworld)
• Keel-Verezy (minor race)

Neutral

• Spathi (Fwiffo may be made friends with; alliance after exterminating the Evil Ones)
• Umgah (hostile after being taken over by the neo-Dnyarri; friendly after becoming their Great Hero; hostile after becoming their Great Enemy)
• Utwig (alliance after returning the Ultron)

Hostile

• Androsynth (minor race)
• Dnyarri/neo-Dnyarri (though with the Taalo Shield you can render him to cooperate)
• Ilwrath (except while The Captain is impersonating Dogar and Kazon)
• Mycon (neutral at Beta Brahe 1)
• Shofixti (friendly after insulting them three times; alliance after species is reborn)
• Slylandro (though their Probes are hostile due to a bug)
• Thraddash (alliance after becoming their Great Teacher; hostile after stealing their Aqua Helix)
• Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah
• Ur-Quan Kzer-Za (neutral after they lose the Doctrinal Conflict)
• VUX (Admiral ZEX is friendly, becomes hostile when given the VUX Beast, immediately killed by the Beast)
• Yehat (Yehat rebels are friendly)
